As RadioShack closes shop, look for deals

1280px-RadioShack_Exterior_ModifiedI’ve received a number of messages and comments regarding close-out and clearance deals at RadioShack retail stores. While this varies by market and the type of store (some are corporate, others are RS franchises), there’s no question: now is the time to check for deals.

My good friend and SWLing Post reader, Mike Hansgen (K8RAT), discovered that his local RS in Ohio has marked everything 25% off. Everything.

Another reader recently commented that his RS store had a similar deal–25% off everything–but even increased the percentage of savings as you purchased more items.

While RadioShack has few shortwave radios of note these days, they do have a lot of essential items for your home radio shack: cables, connectors, components, soldering equipment, batteries, scanners, DeoxIT and even Arduino products to name a few.

If you find that your local RS is liquidating stock, please comment with details. Let’s compare notes!

I am in Illinois near Chicago. I stopped at a store in suburban Des Plaines. There were 2 employees on duty, and neither one was very happy. They said they had no idea what was going to happen with the store, but in addition to the 25% off, there were a lot of items on clearance at 50% off and more.

I looked for one of the new Eton Radios, but they were already sold out. I found a Grundig S450DLX on sale for $34.00 brand new. I do not think this is a very good radio, but as it was new and had the AC Adapter as well, I bought one. Quite a value at that price. I figure if I really do not like it I can always use it as a parts radio. It was certainly cheap enough.

There were a lot of people in there scooping up the clearance items, including one guy who bought 3 of these radios right after I got mine. I asked him what he was going to do with 3 radios and he said he was going to resell them on Ebay.

    Good luck with that.

I’ve hit a few stores in the Twin Cities area. All have everything marked at 25% off right now.

Several stores are being cleaned out and their inventory is being moved to a few locations around the metro area.

The St. Paul Arcade store is one location that inventory is being taken to.

Very tempted by many things and wondering if I should wait for bigger discounts. Most employees are still not really sure what’s going on. Most stores just have one employee working.
