Hi everyone. After spending some time on this site I got curious about SW radio and bought a Tecsun PL-880. I am on the outskirts of Houston on the second (top) floor, using the aux. antenna that came with the radio strung up in a window at night. All I get is Radio Havana (in English) and some American preachers. Very disappointing and I feel like I wasted my money. Am I doing something wrong? Do you have to have a bigger antenna or live out in the country or be up on a mountain for these things to work? I thought I’d ask the experts here first before I try to get a refund. Many years ago I was a CB radio fan and AM DX-er (if there is such a thing), so I know listening can be fun. So far this SW radio is a dud.

      Hi, Boyd,

Thanks for your comment and welcome to the hobby!

It’s not at all uncommon what you’re experiencing. SWLing takes a bit of time and patience–mainly to know how, where and when to listen.

Sounds like you’re only receiving the strongest of stations. This might be due to local interference. Check out and try some of the tips in this post:
      https://swling.com/blog/2014/05/frugal-swling-investing-little-but-getting-a-lot-out-of-your-radio/

The lowest hanging fruit–shortwave station wise–here in North America is to listen to the 31M band starting around sunset. Tune between 9,300-10,000 kHz. Conditions, today, aren’t all that great, but you should hear some stations tonight. Look for stations on this site: http://www.shortwaveschedule.com/

Don’t send it back yet! You’ll get the hang of it!

      Cheers,
      Thomas

Thanks for listing them 🙂 it helps keeping an overview (and here the four alarm memories of the Sony ICF2001D are put to great use) 🙂
