Moreover, we have good\u00a0friends\u00a0from Germany visiting;\u00a0of course, they wanted to see who their winning team will be playing in the final match come Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>But as we live in a fairly\u00a0rural area, and don&#8217;t place much of a priority on television (radio, anyone?), we have no cable, no satellite, and with no more than a rabbit-ear indoor antenna on our only telly, no\u00a0local over-the-air broadcasters available. But we found we were able to watch the match stream live on ESPN via an <a title=\"What is an Apple TV?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00I4ZO11C\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=211189&amp;creative=373489&amp;creativeASIN=B00I4ZO11C&amp;link_code=as3&amp;tag=swlcom01-20&amp;linkId=NPJJCSQGLAV3SAAU\" target=\"_blank\">Apple TV box<\/a>\u00a0attached to our only television.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I also tuned in the match on shortwave radio&#8211;via the BBC World Service on 11,810 kHz out of Ascension\u00a0Island&#8211;starting a little after 20:00 UTC. And guess which\u00a0stream was more &#8220;live&#8221; (i.e., immediate), ESPN or shortwave? \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/download\/BBC11.81MHz09JUL142005Z\/BBC-11.81MHz-09JUL14-2005Z.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s the recording<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/BBC11.81MHz09JUL142005Z\" width=\"500\" height=\"30\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Answer: \u00a0You guessed it&#8211;the shortwave coverage was<em> one full minute<\/em> in advance of the ESPN &#8220;live&#8221; stream. My friends watching television in another room marveled at my clairvoyance&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>When the match went into extra time, as Argentina and the Netherlands were tied 0-0, the BBC World Service dropped the frequency to KBS (you&#8217;ll hear a few minutes of KBS in the recording). \u00a0At this point\u00a0I was resigned to watching the match on ESPN, as I didn&#8217;t want to miss any of the action while trying to find another broadcaster covering the match.<\/p>\n<p>Then, radio to the rescue: \u00a0I received the following tweet from<em> SWLing Post<\/em> reader\/contributor @LondonShortwave:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Listening to ARG vs HOL live 6180 R.N.Amaz\u00f4nia <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/grtot78JZ4\">http:\/\/t.co\/grtot78JZ4<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SWLingDotCom\">@SWLingDotCom<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UlisK3LU\">@UlisK3LU<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rya857\">@rya857<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adxb1159\">@adxb1159<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EA4004SWL\">@EA4004SWL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/El_Radioescucha\">@El_Radioescucha<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 London Shortwave (@LondonShortwave) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LondonShortwave\/statuses\/487001190094610434\">July 9, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>So I quickly tuned to Radio Nacional Amazonia on 6,180, where I discovered\u00a0a booming signal and full match coverage. Even though the commentary was in Portuguese, a language I can&#8217;t speak, I could still follow the match knowing player and team names. When Argentina won the penalty kicks after extra time, commentators exploded with excitement. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/download\/RNA6.18MHz09JUL142234Z\/RNA-6.18MHz--09JUL14-2234Z.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Listen for yourself<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/RNA6.18MHz09JUL142234Z\" width=\"500\" height=\"30\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What made the match all the better, besides watching it with my good friends here at home, was following it with my shortwave friends across the globe. As we exchanged tweets (while following coverage) it was as if we were all in the same room.
