And, I readily admit, I thoroughly\u00a0enjoy\u00a0these questions! \u00a0They give me a chance\u2013and good excuse, really\u2013to be\u00a0imaginative and innovative, to\u00a0push beyond mere practical or\u00a0monetary constraints\u00a0to consider unique\u00a0environments, weather conditions, durability needs, power requirements,\u00a0and\/or resource availability&#8230;great\u00a0fun.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u00a0enjoy this kind of brain game, too, check out our\u00a0virtual\u00a0challenge that follows:<\/p>\n<p>Should you agree to take it on, you&#8217;ll need to complete it within two weeks. As a teacher you can use the Internet at any school in Bhutan, though you&#8217;ve been told there is no internet access in remote Laya.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your budget:<\/strong>\u00a0$1,200 US\u2013which must cover\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0of your radio requirements (radio, antenna, batteries, and all accessories)<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Flag_of_Bhutan.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10542\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Flag_of_Bhutan.svg_-300x200.png\" alt=\"Flag_of_Bhutan.svg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Flag_of_Bhutan.svg_-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Flag_of_Bhutan.svg_-100x66.png 100w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Flag_of_Bhutan.svg_.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Scenario:\u00a0<\/strong>You&#8217;re serving a two year assignment as an English and Science school teacher in the extremely\u00a0remote community of Laya, Bhutan. Your logistics, travel and living expenses will all be covered for you by the agency which arranges the teacher assignment.\u00a0\u00a0That being said, your total amount of luggage cannot exceed the maximum amount of luggage allowed by your airline:\u00a0one carry-on and two check-in bags, both of no more than 60 kg (132 lbs), total. There will be some winter weather clothing made for you locally in Laya. You will work and live in the town of Laya, Bhutan (population 3,000) as an English and Science teacher. Laya&#8217;s altitude is 3,820 meters or 12,533 feet.<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve settled in, ordering a new radio or accessories\u00a0<em>will\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0be an option. Repairing your radio will also be very difficult as you expect no access to electronic repair facilities. An emphasis on quality equipment is a must. You might be wise to consider a small, back-up radio as well.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve allowed yourself a rather generous budget since this is such a long-term assignment. You&#8217;ve allocated $1,200 US &#8211;the price of a good laptop computer. You do not plan to bring a laptop,\u00a0but\u00a0you do plan to bring a lightweight tablet PC or\u00a0smart phone for use when you travel regionally, in hopes that you will find internet access in other towns. Your main limitations will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being completely off the grid<\/li>\n<li>Weight and size of equipment<\/li>\n<li>Allowance for alternative power supplies (how will you charge your batteries at home?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your\u00a0small, one room\u00a0stone cottage is attached to another similar cottage. \u00a0You will be able to string a\u00a0wire antenna outside, and you understand that there is even &#8220;a small\u00a0tree&#8221; outside the window.\u00a0Weather, at this altitude, can be extreme at times.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll assume you&#8217;re starting from scratch, that you have neither radio nor accessories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your goal is to have the\u00a0<em>best shortwave listening set-up possible<\/em>\u00a0for your budget and for this location.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are a ham radio operator (or plan to become one), you may chose a general coverage transceiver for this assignment. There is, however, no guarantee that you will be able to successfully procure a Bhutanese license, but there is some promise. (I can assure you that if you do get on the air, you&#8217;ll need to be familiar with operating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barrowhamradio.org\/images\/articles\/New%20HF%20Operator%20-%20He's%20Operating%20Split.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">split<\/a>\u00a0and working pile-ups!)<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, the more you understand the unique geography and infrastructure of Bhutan\u00a0and its limitations, the better choices you&#8217;ll make for your gear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Limitations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>You&#8217;re limited to a (virtual) budget of $1,200 US<\/strong> to procure your supplies; ideally, this includes shipping costs of the purchase<\/li>\n<li><strong>You can select\u00a0used gear<\/strong>, but must base your choices\u00a0on reality (i.e.,\u00a0actually find item(s) online and document the price and time of\u00a0availability). If you &#8220;shop&#8221;\u00a0eBay, make sure you&#8217;re using the final price, not the current or opening bid. If you do\u00a0locate something used on <a title=\"Click here for some tips!\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/Marketplace.htm\" target=\"_blank\">eBay<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"QTH search\" href=\"http:\/\/swap.qth.com\/search-results.php?keywords=receiver&amp;fieldtosearch=TitleOrDesc\" target=\"_blank\">QTH.com<\/a>, <a title=\"QRZ swap meet\" href=\"http:\/\/forums.qrz.com\/forumdisplay.php?7-Ham-Radio-Gear-For-Sale\" target=\"_blank\">QRZ.com<\/a> or\u00a0at <a title=\"Universal Radio's Used List\" href=\"http:\/\/universal-radio.com\/alert.html\" target=\"_blank\">Universal Radio<\/a>, for example, include the link! (Just to\u00a0add to the fun.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your main objective is to listen to international broadcasters,\u00a0and do a little DXing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Remember, you&#8217;ll be stuck with this radio for two full years! So <strong>choose\u00a0something you&#8217;ll love to operate<\/strong>, and don&#8217;t forget your vital accessories.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Note that the limitations of\u00a0this exercise are simply to level the playing field for everyone as well as to make the challenge a little tougher\u00a0(and thus more fun!).
