{"id":10968,"date":"2014-10-02T07:57:30","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T11:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=10968"},"modified":"2014-10-02T07:58:36","modified_gmt":"2014-10-02T11:58:36","slug":"shortwave-listening-in-a-hospital-lobby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/shortwave-listening-in-a-hospital-lobby\/","title":{"rendered":"Shortwave listening in a hospital lobby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/ExcaliburviaTeamviewer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10970\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/ExcaliburviaTeamviewer.jpg\" alt=\"ExcaliburviaTeamviewer\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/ExcaliburviaTeamviewer.jpg 480w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/ExcaliburviaTeamviewer-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This morning,\u00a0at 6:00\u00a0am,\u00a0I had to take a friend to the hospital for a scheduled (minor) operation.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital waiting room is spartan for a projected three hour wait, but the complimentary wi-fi Internet is quite speedy.\u00a0I had planned to catch up on a movie or two via Netflix, but the hospital blocks video streaming.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, I just noticed\u00a0that the hospital does <em>not<\/em> block <a title=\"TeamViewer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teamviewer.com\/en\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">TeamViewer&#8211;my remote PC application of choice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Remote listening<\/h2>\n<p>I just logged into my home PC and launched both the\u00a0<a title=\"The Elad FDM-S2 SDR: Unboxing, installing, and a first recording\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/the-elad-fdm-s2-sdr-unboxing-installing-and-a-first-recording\/\">Elad FDM-S2<\/a> and <a title=\"A review of the WiNRADiO WR-G31DDC \u201cExcalibur\u201d software defined radio (SDR)\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/a-review-of-the-winradio-wr-g31ddc-excalibur-software-defined-radio-sdr\/\">WinRadio Excabur<\/a>\u00a0SDR applications&#8211;fortunately, I discovered that the Excalibur was hooked up to an external antenna.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does <a title=\"TeamViewer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teamviewer.com\/en\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">TeamViewer<\/a>\u00a0allow me to control a software defined radio, but it actually streams the receiver audio from my PC. With my inexpensive\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=sony%20earphones&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=swlcom01-20&amp;linkId=55IRVZMUFTOIM4MK\" target=\"_blank\">in-ear Sony headphones<\/a>, the sound isolation and audio fidelity are quite good for a compressed audio stream. Indeed, other than a one second delay in response, the user\u00a0experience is nearly as good as being home.<\/p>\n<p>I should note that I could also use the <a title=\"Teamviewer Apps\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teamviewer.com\/en\/download\/mobile.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">TeamViewer app<\/a> on my iPhone, but 4G reception in the hospital is very poor and controlling an SDR from a small touch\u00a0screen is less than desirable (though works in a pinch&#8211;no pun intended).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m currently\u00a0tuned and listening to <em>Radio Australia<\/em>, <em>Radio Mali<\/em> and the <em>Voice of Korea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 31 meter band seems to be wide open at this morning.
