I was so eager to get started on the build, that I read the instructions, lined a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and began placing the parts on the board within an hour of bringing the package home from the post office!<\/p>\n<p>This was my first time building a &#8220;Pittsburg&#8221; type kit, where through hole components are surface-mounted on soldering pads.\u00a0It&#8217;s a brilliant technique which is very forgiving if the kit builder\u00a0accidentally mounts the wrong part or mounts a component with the incorrect orientation.<\/p>\n<p>I had hoped to have the kit finished the following day, but other priorities took precedence: I&#8217;ve been preparing for my <a title=\"October 10: Let\u2019s talk shortwave\u2026and astronomy\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/october-10-lets-talk-shortwave-and-astronomy\/\">presentation tomorrow at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute<\/a>, preparing a shortwave radio buyer&#8217;s guide for the November issue of <a title=\"TSM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thespectrummonitor.com\/\">The Spectrum Monitor magazine<\/a>,\u00a0and putting together the results of the <a title=\"Virtual radio challenge II: two years, off grid in the Himalayas\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/virtual-radio-challenge-ii-two-years-off-grid-in-the-himalayas\/\">Virtual Radio Challenge II<\/a>\u00a0(which will be published early next week). Fortunately,\u00a0I <em>love<\/em> doing this stuff in my spare time!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m eager to pick the Ozark back up early next week and finish the build. It&#8217;s become somewhat of a dangling carrot&#8211;a reward\u00a0for\u00a0finishing other projects\u00a0in advance.
