Click to enlarge.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Of course, at my non-profit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earstoourworld.org\/news\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ears To Our World<\/a>, we celebrate the unique power of radio everyday as well.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, we&#8217;re in the process of preparing at least another 100 radios for\u00a0Sierra Leone, where children are receiving education over the airwaves as schools have been closed in an effort to\u00a0stop the spread of Ebola.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to help us, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earstoourworld.org\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\">please consider a donation of any amount<\/a>. \u00a0Certainly a meaningful\u00a0way to give the gift of radio and education.<\/p>\n<h2>On air events<\/h2>\n<p>If you can get on the air today, there are a few events happening around the world you might be able to catch:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Alexanderson Alternator Station SAQ<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_4665\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/SAQ+sandare_svartvitt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4665\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4665\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/SAQ+sandare_svartvitt.jpg\" alt=\"Alexanderson alternator in the SAQ Grimeton VLF transmitter.\" width=\"280\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/SAQ+sandare_svartvitt.jpg 280w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/SAQ+sandare_svartvitt-100x68.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alexanderson alternator in the SAQ Grimeton VLF transmitter.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>SWLing Post<\/em> reader, Greg (VA7BC), passes along this announcement from the ARRL:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The World Heritage Grimeton Radio SAQ in Sweden plans to fire up its Alexanderson alternator on 17.2 kHz on the occasion of UNESCO World Radio Day, Friday, February 13. <strong>The station will begin tuning at 1430 UTC, and a message will be transmitted at 1500 UTC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A message with a theme of \u201cpeace\u201d has been put together by more than 200 citizens of Varberg, Sweden, via the \u201cVarberg Calling for Peace\u201d project.<\/p>\n<p>SAQ will not be issuing QSL cards nor post a list of reports, but it will accept brief listener reports. The Grimeton site\u2019s Amateur Radio station SK6SAQ will be active, using a special event World Radio Day call sign \u2014 7S6WRD. <strong>Frequencies: 7035 kHz or 14,035 khz, CW, and 3755 kHz SSB. QSL to 7S6WRD via SM bureau.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arrl.org\/news\/alexanderson-alternator-station-saq-to-transmit-on-world-radio-day-febuary-13\" target=\"_blank\">Read the full article at the ARRL website<\/a>. I will certainly attempt to hear this broadcast on 14,035 kHz CW.<\/p>\n<p>If any <em>SWLing Post<\/em> readers are able to record the SSB transmission on 3,755 kHz, I would love to add the audio to our <a href=\"http:\/\/shortwavearchive.com\" target=\"_blank\">audio archive<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union relay<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ABU-logo.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8676\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ABU-logo.jpeg\" alt=\"ABU-logo\" width=\"243\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ABU-logo.jpeg 243w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ABU-logo-100x85.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.southgatearc.org\/news\/2015\/february\/world_radio_day_relays_round_the_world.htm#.VN3ql_msUZI\" target=\"_blank\">The Southgate ARC report<\/a>s that ABU members will particiapte in a round-the-world broadcast relay:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;On Friday 13 February 2015, participating broadcasters around the globe will devote at least half-an-hour of their programming to the WRD 2015 themes \u201cInnovation and youth in radio\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The main organisers, the European Broadcasting Union, in partnership with the ABU and other broadcasting unions, will also offer three short optional pre-recorded radio features devoted to Radio and Youth, Radio and Innovation and the History of Humanitarian Use of Radio: UN Radio.<\/p>\n<p>The segments can be used whole or in part in a time slot of each station\u2019s choice. Most of the features will also be available with scripts in French, Russian, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese, thanks to the UN.<\/p>\n<p>Speeches by UN personalities will also be available ready to use on air, plus a one-hour rights-free concert live from Geneva by the UN Jazz Orchestra will be made available.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers say that, as this will be a relay following the world\u2019s time\u00a0 zones, there will be a succession of radio stations each handing over to the next participant throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>To give listeners around the world the chance to follow this special WRD program, the broadcasts will be put on an Internet stream, coordinated via the EBU in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abu.org.my\/Latest_News-@-World_Radio_Day_relays_round_the_world.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.abu.org.my\/Latest_News-@-World_Radio_Day_relays_round_the_world.aspx<\/a>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>4U0ITU on-air for World Radio Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ITU-Club-LOGO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12289\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ITU-Club-LOGO-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"ITU-Club-LOGO\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ITU-Club-LOGO-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ITU-Club-LOGO.jpg 392w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Again, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southgatearc.org\/news\/2015\/february\/4u0itu_on_air_today_for_world_radio_day.htm?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AmateurRadioNews+%28Southgate+Amateur+Radio+News%29#.VN3qe_msUZI\" target=\"_blank\">Southgate ARC<\/a> reports via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arrl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">the ARRL<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The ITU International Amateur Radio Club station in Geneva will use the special call 4U0ITO to mark World Radio Day on Friday, February 13<\/p>\n<p>The ARRL report this event also marks the kickoff for the International Telecommunication Union 150th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>International Amateur Radio Union President Tim Ellam, VE6SH, will inaugurate special call sign 4U0ITU at 0900 UT. He will be accompanied by ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao, other elected officials and VIPs.<\/p>\n<p>The IARC will use the 4U0ITU call sign until the World Radiocommunication Conference 2015, November 2-27.<\/p>\n<p>World Radio Day commemorates the first broadcasts of UN Radio in 1946.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Send listener reports to your favorite shortwave broadcasters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11477\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"DW Kigali QSL Card\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Many of your favorite shortwave broadcasters will dedicate a portion of their programming\u00a0to World Radio Day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the perfect day, as a listener, to let your favorite broadcasters know you&#8217;re listening!<\/strong> Send in a proper QSL report&#8211;mention the time, frequency and type of programming you heard. Give the\u00a0broadcaster\u00a0a proper signal report as well (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SINPO_code\" target=\"_blank\">click here to read about the universally accepted SINPO code<\/a>). Broadcasters love to hear about any insight you pulled from their news items or reports&#8211;the more detail, the better. And thank them for broadcasting over shortwave.<\/p>\n<p>You can typically find contact information on the broadcaster&#8217;s website. \u00a0If you have any difficulty, please comment and I, or another reader\/contributor, will try to help.<\/p>\n<h2>Happy World Radio Day!<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s been fun to see how World Radio Day has grown over the years.
