For ages, these three companies dominated the handheld radio market.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, several Chinese radio manufactures (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1GM8bIN\" target=\"_blank\">Baofeng<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1GM8eEv\" target=\"_blank\">Wouxun<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.universal-radio.com\/catalog\/ht\/1008.html\" target=\"_blank\">TDXone<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/universal-radio.com\/catalog\/ht\/5541.html\" target=\"_blank\">TYT<\/a> to name a few) started flooding the market with inexpensive handheld transceivers&#8211;radios that literally cost a <em>fraction<\/em> of those produced by the &#8220;big three.&#8221; Where a Yaesu dual band handheld might cost between $150-250 US, a Baefeng model might cost $25-50 US.<\/p>\n<p>As one might imagine, these inexpensive transceivers gained quite a following in the ham radio community and with\u00a0preparedness\/communications enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read that many of these ultra-cheap transceivers are difficult to program and I&#8217;m sure that&#8217;s one of the factors that has kept me from purchasing\u00a0one.<\/p>\n<p>I also assumed that a $25 radio must be very poorly constructed.\u00a0Seems I&#8217;m incorrect at least on this point.<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to Dave (K4SV) for sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kZCDBsBuhmg\" target=\"_blank\">the following video<\/a> from Chris (K5CLC), who put the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1GINkWQ\" target=\"_blank\">Baofeng UV-5R<\/a> through an &#8220;extreme&#8221; field test:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kZCDBsBuhmg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1GINkWQ\" target=\"_blank\">Baofeng UV-5R<\/a>\u00a0is available at Amazon.com for a mere\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1GINkWQ\" target=\"_blank\">$25.80 US <em>shipping included<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15349\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Baofeng-Accessories.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15349\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15349\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Baofeng-Accessories-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"UV-5R accessories.
