I parked downtown and strolled\u00a0into the past\u00a0via\u00a0Papa&#8217;s General Store,\u00a0a small local store with a lot of merchandise\u2013\u2013and a lot of charm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_141930198.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15547\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_141930198.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151112_141930198\" width=\"800\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_141930198.jpg 800w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_141930198-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While browsing a display\u00a0of antiques, I happened to notice a vintage radio perched on a high shelf.\u00a0Here&#8217;s what caught my eye:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_140636237_TOP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15522\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_140636237_TOP-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151112_140636237_TOP\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_140636237_TOP.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_140636237_TOP-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I asked, was the radio was for sale? And, indeed, it was. One of the sales clerks\u00a0pulled it from the shelf, dusted off the top, and read the price: $74. I noted that it was a West German Telefunken receiver. \u00a0I asked the clerk, Chris,\u00a0\u00a0if it worked, and he confirmed that it did;\u00a0it belonged to his uncle, who had clearly taken very good care of it.<\/p>\n<p>Chris\u00a0allowed me to plug it in, turn it on, and tune in a couple of local stations&#8230;The Telefunken produced beautiful audio without even the slightest hint of a hum. Chris was pleased that\u00a0I appreciated the radio, and sincerely\u00a0wanted me to take it home, so he lowered the price a bit further. \u00a0I agreed, and purchased it without hesitation. It&#8217;s a tube radio produced in the early 1960s in West Germany, and is now the only tube-based radio I own that covers the FM band.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_195818546_TOP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15524\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_195818546_TOP-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151112_195818546_TOP\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_195818546_TOP.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151112_195818546_TOP-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, I was very eager to get the Telefunken on the air, so that afternoon\u00a0I headed to our balcony overlooking the Atlantic, tuned around a bit on the mediumwave band&#8230;and was simply amazed at all it could receive. \u00a0I picked up\u00a0my smart phone, and with it\u00a0made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nq4pTO89VAM\" target=\"_blank\">a very short recording of the Cuban station, <em>Radio Reloj<\/em>, on 820 kHz<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nq4pTO89VAM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>My smart phone&#8217;s microphone doesn&#8217;t begin to do the Telefunken&#8217;s rich audio justice, but you can clearly hear <em>Radio Reloj&#8217;<\/em>s ticks and &#8220;RR&#8221; in Morse Code at the top of the minute (indeed, if you&#8217;re listening with headphones, you may also hear crashing waves in the background). Something nearby generated a lot of RFI right on frequency, too , but the rest of the broadcast band had a surprisingly low noise floor.<\/p>\n<p>I also spent some time with the Telefunken on the FM broadcast band;\u00a0with a simple wire antenna, this worked wonders.<\/p>\n<p>In my humble op, the audio the Telefunken produces is simply beautiful. \u00a0And so, I&#8217;ve got to add, is this vintage radio.
