I had hoped to attend in DC, but sadly had a conflict in my schedule that weekend.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m happy to see that the conference got several mentions in the press.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many thanks to <em>SWLing Post<\/em> contributor, Bill Patalon, for sharing a link to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.radioworld.com\/article\/preservation-conference-highlighted-unique-radio-perspectives\/278260\" target=\"_blank\"> this article in RadioWorld<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Preservation Conference Highlighted Unique Radio Perspectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The launch of the first \u201cSave America\u2019s Radio Heritage\u201d conference saw a greater turnout than expected, with a total of roughly 300 attendees over two days in the nation\u2019s capital last week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The event, held at the Library of Congress and the University of Maryland, focused on the state of radio preservation, but the conference was more than just about the process of preserving historical recordings and other radio documents, but sharing some of America\u2019s unique uses of the medium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Radio Preservation Task Force calls itself the first national radio history project of the Library of Congress. It grew out of the Library\u2019s ambitious National Recording Preservation Plan, published in 2012. The task force says radio is \u201cperpetually declared to be a dying medium\u201d but nevertheless attracts dedicated listeners and commercial and public support. The organizers have said radio\u2019s history is a chronicle of culture and a potential trove for historical researchers. The national plan in 2012 specifically called for a symposium to discuss the challenges of preserving American radio broadcasts; last week it was put into action.[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.radioworld.com\/article\/preservation-conference-highlighted-unique-radio-perspectives\/278260\" target=\"_blank\">Continue reading on RadioWorld&#8217;s website&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The conference also caught the attention of APM&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2016\/02\/25\/education\/task-force-aims-preserve-radio-history\" target=\"_blank\">Marketplace<\/a>:<\/strong><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2016\/02\/25\/education\/task-force-aims-preserve-radio-history\/popout\" width=\"100%\" height=\"240px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Task force aims to preserve radio history<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A group of librarians, academics, and audio enthusiasts is gathering in Washington Friday for a first-of-its kind conference. The topic: \u201cSaving America\u2019s Radio Heritage.\u201d The meeting is part of a massive effort to preserve recordings going back to the early 20th century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The effort is not focused on the classic network quiz shows and radio plays of the 1930s through 50s, said Chris Sterling, who chairs the Radio Preservation Task Force at the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve pretty much got that stuff,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we\u2019re talking about instead is trying to get the local radio voice in America: commercial, educational, college radio, all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One example is a 1956 interview with Rosa Parks from the Pacifica Radio Archives, recorded after Parks&#8217; arrest for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on an Alabama bus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also at PopUp Archive:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/blog.popuparchive.com\/?p=836<\/p>\n<p><strong>And on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theosgoodfile.com\/2016\/02\/26\/02-26-16-825-am-saving-radio-history-for-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">CBS Radio Network<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Those of us who work in radio are proud it has such a long and interesting history\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>[&#8230;]But there\u2019s a problem: Radio, by its very nature, is ephemeral.
