Photographer: Robert Markowitz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the VX-3 tuned to 145.8 MHz, we waited as the ISS made its way above the horizon. The downlink audio of\u00a0astronaut <a href=\"http:\/\/timpeake.esa.int\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Peake (KG5BVI)<\/a> communicating with Walter Jackson Elementary in Decatur, Alabama, started to punch through the static after a minute or two. We listened the entire time we\u00a0had line-of-sight to the ISS&#8211;about five minutes or so. \u00a0We were\u00a0pretty deep in a valley at that point, so I&#8217;m\u00a0pleased we were\u00a0able to catch even that much of a pass.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we could only hear one side of the conversation: the downlink from the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>It was a memorable event for my girls who have seen ISS passes at night, but had never heard live audio from an astronaut before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Y2JaFfX6vic\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s a short video<\/a> of two of the exchanges\u00a0we heard:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y2JaFfX6vic?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Y2JaFfX6vic\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to view on YouTube<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Eric pointed me to the\u00a0ARISS &#8220;Upcoming Contacts&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ariss.org\/upcoming-contacts.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.ariss.org\/upcoming-contacts.html<\/a>) page where future\u00a0ARISS QSOs are listed. Evidently, this particular\u00a0ARISS QSO was the <em>third<\/em> Eric had monitored in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty much <em>any<\/em> receiver that can tune to 145.80 MHz FM&#8211;or a VHF scanner&#8211;can hear the ARISS downlink as long as the ISS is passing overhead during the transmission.
