{"id":20126,"date":"2016-07-24T06:50:41","date_gmt":"2016-07-24T10:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=20126"},"modified":"2016-07-24T07:02:50","modified_gmt":"2016-07-24T11:02:50","slug":"an-update-on-amateur-radio-activity-in-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/an-update-on-amateur-radio-activity-in-turkey\/","title":{"rendered":"Alive and Well: Post-Coup Amateur Radio in Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Turkey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13500\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Turkey.jpg\" alt=\"Turkey\" width=\"750\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Turkey.jpg 750w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Turkey-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to a number of <em>Post<\/em> readers who shared\u00a0a link to <a href=\"http:\/\/yaesuft817.com\/wp\/turkey-government-revokes-19201-ham-radio-licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\">this news item<\/a> which claims that the\u00a0government of Turkey revoked 3213 ham radio licenses after the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-36877067\" target=\"_blank\">coup attempt.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was reluctant to post this story because I couldn&#8217;t find any other news source substantiating the claim.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, the story is completely inaccurate.<\/p>\n<p>Aziz SASA (TA1E)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trac.org.tr\/haberler\/258-update-on-ham-radio-operations-in-turkey.html\" target=\"_blank\">President of TRAC (IARU-Member Society of Turkey) writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/TRAC-logo-Turkey.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20127\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/TRAC-logo-Turkey.png\" alt=\"TRAC-logo-Turkey\" width=\"425\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/TRAC-logo-Turkey.png 425w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/TRAC-logo-Turkey-300x54.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a>There is no ham radio licence [sic] revoked in Turkey and ham radio operators are operating normally.<\/p>\n<p>The reports on ham radio licenses being revoked by The Supreme Council of Radio and Television (RTUK) are unconfirmed and speculative. RTUK is not a regulatory body of ham radio. We believe that it is against ham radio ethic to share unconfirmed information, especially in this sensitive time. We would like to remind every ham radio operator to avoid sharing unconfirmed news and speculation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition, I can confirm that I&#8217;ve heard a number of Turkish amateur radio operators on the air since the coup attempt.<\/p>\n<p>The site that originally made this claim has posted an update (at the bottom of the page) stating\u00a0:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s [sic] look like this news has been labelled as \u201cFAKE\u201d \u2013 Yesterday we gave this news for first after a quick phone chat with ham radio op. In Istanbul. Apparently there was no interdiction to use HF radio<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This blogger should consider adding the update at the <em>top<\/em> of the post and amending the title to reflect reality.\u00a0I suspect he&#8217;s\u00a0reluctant to do so due to\u00a0the increased traffic this misleading post has brought him.<\/p>\n<p>On a side note: I happened to be listening to (and recording) the Voice of Turkey <em>during<\/em> the\u00a0coup attempt. Of course, the news had been pre-recorded earlier that day and\u00a0almost completely focused on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2016_Nice_attack\" target=\"_blank\">Nice attack<\/a>. There wasn&#8217;t even an interruption of service.
