One of my favorite topics, Neil.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve used both the Grundig G6 and CC Skywave during\u00a0domestic and international travel. In my opinion, <em>both<\/em> are great receivers, especially considering the compact size of each. Here are a few things to note\u00a0about each radio&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(And<em> Post<\/em> readers, you&#8217;re most welcome\u00a0to comment with your\u00a0own additions and views.)<\/p>\n<h2>The Grundig G6<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-03-09_08-53-50_742.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2932\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-03-09_08-53-50_742.jpg\" alt=\"2012-03-09_08-53-50_742\" width=\"640\" height=\"508\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-03-09_08-53-50_742.jpg 640w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-03-09_08-53-50_742-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2012-03-09_08-53-50_742-100x79.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A great little unit, albeit no longer in production; you can buy a used unit <a href=\"http:\/\/ebay.to\/2aDKiW4\" target=\"_blank\">on eBay<\/a> or similar\u00a0sites. <a href=\"http:\/\/ebay.to\/2aDKiW4\" target=\"_blank\">A quick eBay search<\/a>\u00a0reveals that prices vary between about $75-150 US. Note: Personally, I believe anything over $80 shipped is probably asking too much for a used G6.<\/li>\n<li>Like other Grundig portables of the era, the G6&#8217;s rubberized coating will eventually become sticky\/tacky. But fortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/tag\/sticky-radios\/\" target=\"_blank\">we&#8217;ve posted\u00a0a few proven remedies<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Re emergency use: this one offers SSB, but lacks NOAA weather bands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The C.Crane CC Skywave<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/CCrane-CC-Skywave.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14500\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/CCrane-CC-Skywave.jpg\" alt=\"CCrane-CC-Skywave\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/CCrane-CC-Skywave.jpg 650w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/CCrane-CC-Skywave-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Currently in production\u2013\u2013and supported by C.Crane<\/li>\n<li>Great overall sensitivity and selectivity (<a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/review-of-the-c-crane-cc-skywave-portable-radio\/\">read our full review<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>No external antenna jack<\/li>\n<li>Mutes between frequency changes<\/li>\n<li>This unit offers weather frequencies, useful in emergencies, but lacks SSB mode<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since the CC Skywave hit the market, it&#8217;s been my go-to portable for travel at least 80% of the time. Of course, I still pack the Grundig G6 occasionally, and even my <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/a-repair-story-vlados-fix-for-the-classic-sony-icf-sw100\/\">Sony ICF-SW100<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Personally I prefer the Skywave because, frankly, it&#8217;s just better tailored to one-bag travel. I like listening to the airport tower and other comms while traveling. Since most of my travel is in North America, I appreciate the weather radio frequencies as well.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose if all of my travels were <em>outside North America,<\/em> I might lean slightly toward the Grundig G6 just so I could have the added benefit of SSB reception. In truth, however, I rarely listen to SSB while traveling. \u00a0SSB\u00a0may\u00a0possibly be useful during civil\/communication emergencies. If SSB reception and portability is important to you, another radio worth considering would be the <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/a-review-of-the-countycomm-gp5ssb-portable-radio-a-great-emergency-portable\/\">CountyComm GP5-SSB<\/a>&#8211;though, like the G6, it also lacks weather frequencies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My opinion?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccrane.com\/CC-Skywave-AM-FM-Shortwave-Weather-and-Airband-Portable-Travel-Radio\" target=\"_blank\">Grab a CC Skywave<\/a>. It&#8217;s a great performer, very compact, and&#8211;unlike the Grundig G6&#8211;is currently in production.\u00a0I&#8217;d only buy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccrane.com\/CC-Skywave-AM-FM-Shortwave-Weather-and-Airband-Portable-Travel-Radio\" target=\"_blank\">a new CC Skywave<\/a>, however, since some of the early models were prone to overloading. The current production run incorporates an update which remedies this.<\/p>\n<p><em>Post<\/em> readers: Please comment with your thoughts and suggestions!
