The weather was fantastic&#8211;a little foggy with mild temperatures and the HF bands were open!<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at our site&#8211;the Craggy Gardens Picnic Area (PK01)&#8211;at 14:30 UTC or so.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/KX3-PK01-NPOTA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21035\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/KX3-PK01-NPOTA.jpg\" alt=\"KX3-PK01-NPOTA\" width=\"450\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/KX3-PK01-NPOTA.jpg 450w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/KX3-PK01-NPOTA-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We brought the following antennas and supports:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a self-contained \u00a020 meter band telescopic fiberglass\u00a0vertical (I recently purchased at the WCARS Hamfest for $40&#8211;!) and<\/li>\n<li>a 31 foot fiberglass <a href=\"http:\/\/ebay.to\/2bHEtL3\" target=\"_blank\">Jackite pole<\/a>\u00a0(the fluorescent orange on in the photos) which we used to\u00a0suspend\u00a0a homemade 40 meter doublet Vlado built the day before.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Setup was quick. We were both especially pleased the 20 meter vertical. The 20 meter band was serving up some excellent QRP DX.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21041\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Vlado-KX3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21041\" class=\"wp-image-21041 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Vlado-KX3.jpg\" alt=\"Vlado-KX3\" width=\"450\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Vlado-KX3.jpg 450w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Vlado-KX3-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21041\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vlado operating CW on the 40 meter band.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When I moved to the 20 meter band, the noise floor was so low on the LD-11, I thought perhaps the band was dead. \u00a0Not so!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/LD-11-NPOTA-PK01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21036\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/LD-11-NPOTA-PK01.jpg\" alt=\"LD-11-NPOTA-PK01\" width=\"450\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/LD-11-NPOTA-PK01.jpg 450w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/LD-11-NPOTA-PK01-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to believe that with a mere\u00a0<em>eight watts<\/em> in SSB \u00a0I worked Rhode Island, Texas, Montana, Manitoba, Washington, California and <em>Slovenia<\/em> from a picnic table on the Blue Ridge Parkway.<\/p>\n<p>Reports on the LD-11 audio were all very positive. I&#8217;ve used the LD-11 for eight NPOTA activations this year and can say with confidence that it&#8217;s a brilliant &amp; fun little field radio. (<em>FYI: I&#8217;ll be publishing a full review of the LD-11 in the October 2016 issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thespectrummonitor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Spectrum Monitor magazine<\/a>.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Vlado and I are planning on several more activations together this year. Our next one will most likely be at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/carl\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Carl Sandburg Home<\/a>-.
