No doubt, this is because there are so many wildfires in the greater southern Appalachian region\u00a0right now, which is in the midst of a record drought. Brush fires start up almost daily, and no rain is in sight. \u00a0In the mountains, the air is hazy with smoke,\u00a0and it&#8217;s become a struggle for fire departments to contain these blazes, even with help from outside the region.<\/p>\n<p>Living, as we do, in a forest, we&#8217;ve always had to think through contingency plans if a forest fire should threaten our home: \u00a0with only a two hour (or so) warning, what items would we grab and load into our truck?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we&#8217;d\u00a0likely focus on those things that are irreplaceable and thus essentially invaluable: our few family heirlooms, boxes of photos, documents\u2013\u2013you know, stuff you can&#8217;t buy.<\/p>\n<p>But what about radios? \u00a0I hope I&#8217;ll never be forced to choose the\u00a0<em>one thing<\/em>\u00a0I should save from my shack,\u00a0because there are several\u00a0to which I&#8217;m rather sentimentally attached&#8230;There&#8217;s my Zenith Transoceanic, for example&#8211;the first proper shortwave radio I ever owned. There are also a number of vintage radios as well as some SDRs which have become my staple receivers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Scott-Marine-SLR-M-Dial.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17282\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Scott-Marine-SLR-M-Dial.jpg\" alt=\"Scott-Marine-SLR-M-Dial\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Scott-Marine-SLR-M-Dial.jpg 800w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Scott-Marine-SLR-M-Dial-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Scott-Marine-SLR-M-Dial-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Scott-Marine-SLR-M-Dial-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the end, though, there&#8217;s no question which radio I&#8217;d grab. It would have to be <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/tag\/scott-marine-radio-slr-m\/\">my Scott Marine Radio Model SLR-M<\/a>, affectionately nicknamed &#8220;Scottie.&#8221;. True, she&#8217;s\u00a0not even<em> close<\/em> to portable at a solid\u00a090 pounds, but I&#8217;d strap her to the roof of my vehicle, if I had to.<\/p>\n<p>Why? \u00a0Well, it&#8217;s the most pristine vintage radio I own, and I use it daily. If it&#8217;s not tuned to Radio Australia in the morning, it&#8217;s tuned to my <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/review-of-the-sstran-amt3000-am-transmitter-kit\/\">AMT3000 AM transmitter<\/a> on 1570 kHz drawing in\u00a0any of a number of stations I relay from my WiFi radio.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Scott-Marine-Radio-SLR-M.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13338\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Scott-Marine-Radio-SLR-M.jpg\" alt=\"Scott-Marine-Radio-SLR-M\" width=\"650\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Scott-Marine-Radio-SLR-M.jpg 650w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Scott-Marine-Radio-SLR-M-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scottie simply isn&#8217;t replaceable. Even though my Elecraft KX3 probably costs more in terms of monetary value, I could eventually scrape together the money to buy another KX3. But I couldn&#8217;t buy Scottie again. Not this one.<\/p>\n<p>So, there you go: after we&#8217;ve saved those things important to our family, I&#8217;d grab a 1945 receiver and haul it to safety.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Post<\/em> readers<\/strong>: Now I&#8217;m curious&#8211;if <em>your<\/em> home was threatened by fire or other disaster, what radio would you save?
