the latest ARRL QST magazine, I noticed an advertisement for the new Icom IC-R8600 wideband receiver. \u00a0If you recall, last August, <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/icoms-announcement-includes-two-new-receivers-the-ic-r8600-and-ic-r30\/\">Icom made the announcement that it was introducing two new receivers: The <strong>IC-R8600<\/strong> and the <strong>IC-R30<\/strong> handheld<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The IC-R30\u00a0is the successor to the IC-R20 compact handheld receiver, but will have advanced receiving capabilities and be able to decode D-STAR, P25, NXDN and dPMR digital (conventional) modes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23592\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Icom-IC-R8600-Back.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23592\" class=\"wp-image-23592 other hand, is more akin to the <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2016\/05\/a-review-of-the-icom-ic-7300-direct-rf-sampling-transceiver\/\">IC-7300 transceiver<\/a> in terms of design, but has <em>much<\/em> more functionality than the IC-7300 and covers a wide range of frequencies (10kHz-3GHz).<\/p>\n<p>The Icom IC-R8600 is essentially a tabletop SDR receiver.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few features mentioned on <a href=\"http:\/\/icomamerica.com\/en\/downloads\/DownloadDocument.aspx?Document=827\" target=\"_blank\">the IC-R8600 pre-release brochure<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ultra-wide frequency coverage with RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) function<\/li>\n<li>Fast moving, real-time spectrum scope and waterfall functions<\/li>\n<li>Decodes multiple digital protocols, including D-STAR, NXDNTM, dPMRTM and APCO P25<\/li>\n<li>Large 4.3 inch TFT color touch screen display<\/li>\n<li>Clear audio quality using FPGA\/DSP base architecture with superheterodyne circuitry<\/li>\n<li>Optional RS-R8600 PC remote control software allows control of all receiver functions<\/li>\n<li>I\/Q signal output for use with third-party SDR software and\/or external decoding<\/li>\n<li>The SD card slot for received log, decode log and voice recording<\/li>\n<li>Optional SP-39AD external speaker with integrated power supply<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The back panel
