{"id":24685,"date":"2017-03-15T11:55:06","date_gmt":"2017-03-15T15:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=24685"},"modified":"2017-03-16T06:31:28","modified_gmt":"2017-03-16T10:31:28","slug":"north-korea-information-gathering-in-the-worlds-most-restrictive-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/north-korea-information-gathering-in-the-worlds-most-restrictive-nation\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea: Information Gathering in the World&#8217;s Most Restrictive Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Behind-The-Curtain-e1489578594707.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24686\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Behind-The-Curtain-e1489578594707.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"476\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been an <em>SWLing Post<\/em> reader for long, you&#8217;ll have\u00a0&#8220;met&#8221; him virtually; if you&#8217;ve been in attendance\u00a0the Winter SWL Fest recently, you&#8217;ll recognize him, may have heard him speak, and perhaps\u00a0even have met him in person. \u00a0I&#8217;m speaking, of course, of my good\u00a0friend, <em>Post<\/em> contributor, and fellow radio listener,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/tag\/mark-fahey\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Fahey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What you might <em>not<\/em> know about Mark, an intrepid Aussie and mediahound of remarkable facility and clarity,\u00a0is that he has spent many years (and significant\u00a0personal resources) compiling\u00a0a fascinating and invaluable multi-media project in the form of an iBook he&#8217;s titled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.behindthecurtain.asia\/\" target=\"_blank\">Behind The Curtain<\/a>, which allows outsiders a\u00a0frank\u00a0view directly into\u00a0North Korean propaganda.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DPRK-North-Korea-Propaganda-Fahey.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24698\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DPRK-North-Korea-Propaganda-Fahey.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"721\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DPRK-North-Korea-Propaganda-Fahey.jpeg 721w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DPRK-North-Korea-Propaganda-Fahey-300x196.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/DPRK-North-Korea-Propaganda-Fahey-624x408.jpeg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s astounding is that this view is<em> from within <\/em>North Korea: Mark, having traveled to North Korea\u00a0numerous times (until he made his research public, that is, thus limiting\u00a0his re-entry), successfully rips back North Korea&#8217;s curtain of self-image to reveal, in all its\u00a0stultified\u00a0glory, the inner workings\u2013\u2013and failings\u2013\u2013of the&#8221;Hermit Kingdom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/North-Korea-Radio-Fahey-e1489593105145.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24699\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/North-Korea-Radio-Fahey-e1489593105145.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s now very near to\u00a0publishing \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.behindthecurtain.asia\/\" target=\"_blank\">Behind The Curtain<\/a>, and he&#8217;s making available the\u00a0iBook\u2013\u2013as well as all of the media and research he&#8217;s curated\u2013\u2013for free.<\/p>\n<h2>HOPE X<\/h2>\n<p>During the summer of 2014 Mark ventured to New York City to present his research at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.hope.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">HOPE X<\/a> (Hackers On Planet Earth). Yesterday, I rediscovered the video of Mark&#8217;s presentation at HOPE X on YouTube.
