The vintage Zenith Transoceanic my great-aunt gave me when I was eight was a wonder to tune, and its ability to extract signals from across the planet captivated me. But there was a certain amount of guesswork in the tuning process.\u00a0 So, when I purchased my first digital portable in 1990, it seemed revolutionary:\u00a0 in a snap, I could punch in a frequency, and there I was (virtually speaking). I know a fix for that.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of an email conversation with\u00a0Willi Pa\u00dfmann, SDR support for\u00a0<a title=\"SSB-Electronic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssb.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">SSB-Electronic<\/a>, I learned that&#8211;simply by <a title=\"SSB LAN SDR Downloads\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssb.de\/index.php?language=en&amp;cat=c262_Der-SSB-LAN-SDR.html\" target=\"_blank\">downloading a couple of files from their website<\/a>&#8211;you can &#8220;test-drive&#8221; their high-end\u00a0<a title=\"LAN SDR\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/db\/2011\/07\/ssb-lan-sdr\/\" target=\"_blank\">SSB LAN-SDR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First, a brief primer&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Some SDRs&#8211;like the SSB LAN-SDR&#8211;actually allow you to <em>record and to play back HF spectrum segments<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In a basic example: if I want to record pirate radio stations one evening, but am not sure where they might pop up on the spectrum, I can set my SDR to record, say, an 80 kHz swatch of bandwidth from 6,915 to 6,995 kHz, from, for example, 9:00 pm to midnight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fullscreen-capture-1212012-75444-AM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2611\" title=\"Fullscreen capture 1212012 75444 AM\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fullscreen-capture-1212012-75444-AM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fullscreen-capture-1212012-75444-AM.jpg 760w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fullscreen-capture-1212012-75444-AM-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fullscreen-capture-1212012-75444-AM-100x56.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later, I can play back and listen to the recording, <em>with\u00a0full demodulation and tuning capabilities<\/em>. \u00a0In other words, during playback, I can literally tune around in the spectrum, using all\/any receiver functions of my SDR. It is as though I am listening and tuning,<em> live, <\/em>in real time, though it may be many hours or days later.<\/p>\n<p>Those of you with SDRs will not be surprised by this remarkable feature, as most likely, you&#8217;ve already experimented with this incredible time-bending functionality.<\/p>\n<p>Now, back to SSB-Electronic, and how to test-drive their LAN-SDR receiver. \u00a0It&#8217;s easy, actually:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You download <a title=\"Download from SSB-Electric\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssb.de\/download\/LANSDR_2011-03-22.rar\" target=\"_blank\">the software that runs the LAN-SDR<\/a><\/li>\n<li>You download <a title=\"Download 80M spectrum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssb.de\/download\/rec_09_09_2010_20_03_03_3625000_000.rar\" target=\"_blank\">one<\/a> (or <a title=\"Download 40M spectrum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssb.de\/download\/rec_09_09_2010_19_59_00_7125000_000.rar\" target=\"_blank\">both<\/a>) available spectrum recordings<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once you install their software and import the recording, you can literally tune through and use all of the receiver&#8217;s features within the spectrum recording. You can listen to the noise floor, test the notch, adjustable filters, DSP, tuning rates&#8211;literally experience all the receiver functions in this process.<\/p>\n<p>In my humble opinion, this is\u00a0perhaps\u00a0the most convenient and enjoyable way to try out a receiver.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, other SDR manufacturers will follow SSB-Electronic&#8217;s lead and make their control software and spectrum recodings available online for download and testing.<\/p>\n<p>Happy test-driving!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though I&#8217;ve not yet achieved particularly advanced age, my history in radio certainly started with the analog.
