{"id":2749,"date":"2012-02-13T11:34:42","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T15:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=2749"},"modified":"2012-02-14T11:01:10","modified_gmt":"2012-02-14T15:01:10","slug":"today-is-world-radio-day-support-a-cause-via-shortwave-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/today-is-world-radio-day-support-a-cause-via-shortwave-radio\/","title":{"rendered":"Today is World Radio Day:  Support a Cause via Shortwave Radio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shortwave Radio Listeners may occasionally feel that their hobby is a passive one&#8211;one of simply listening. <em>I&#8217;m here to tell you that it is not.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SWLers are among the more enlightened of media hobbyists, and here&#8217;s why: 1) they tend to be intensely curious about the world, 2) they tend to cultivate a nostalgic appreciation of the past, of the world&#8217;s history and what it teaches, and 3) as a result, they understand the power that radio still holds for much of our world today, especially those the <em>not<\/em>-so-world-wide internet has forgotten or overlooked, and those that political strife oppresses.<\/p>\n<p>This World Radio Day, you can change that false label of <em>&#8220;passive&#8221;<\/em> to <em>active<\/em>, and create change by contributing to <a title=\"The Wall Street Journal Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/magazine.wsj.com\/hunter\/donate\/tuning-in\/\" target=\"_blank\">a charity near and dear to my heart<\/a>&#8211;Ears To Our World (ETOW).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"ETOW site\" href=\"http:\/\/earstoourworld.org\" target=\"_blank\">ETOW<\/a> is a shortwave radio charity that sends self-powered shortwave radios to schools and communities in third world countries.\u00a0 This is because <a title=\"ETOW site\" href=\"http:\/\/earstoourworld.org\" target=\"_blank\">ETOW<\/a>\u00a0believes that <strong><em>access to information <\/em>is<em> access to education.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other words, <strong><em>every <\/em>day is World Radio Day at ETOW<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2757\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/earstoourworld.org\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2757\" class=\" wp-image-2757\" title=\"DSCN2988wtmk\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSCN2988wtmk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSCN2988wtmk.jpg 800w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSCN2988wtmk-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSCN2988wtmk-100x66.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Children in South Sudan listening to music on their self-powered shortwave radio supplied by Ears To Our World.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a title=\"ETOW\" href=\"http:\/\/earstoourworld.org\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to donate to Ears To Our World<\/a>, and make World Radio Day a lasting reality for needy schools throughout our world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Happy World Radio Day!\u00a0 To quote ETOW&#8217;s tagline:\u00a0 <strong>Listen <em>and learn.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>More power to you, SWLers.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shortwave Radio Listeners may occasionally feel that their hobby is a passive one&#8211;one of simply listening.
