I\u2019m very pleased to have received the 8th edition of John Figliozzi\u2019s\u00a0Worldwide Listening Guide\u00a0(WWLG)<\/em>,\u00a0the latest, most updated version of the excellent guide\u00a0I\u2019ve often reviewed.<\/p>\n

SWLing Post<\/em>\u00a0readers know that I\u2019m a huge fan of the\u00a0Word Radio TV Handbook<\/a>\u00a0(WRTH)<\/em>; it\u2019s my go-to guide for radio frequencies and schedules.<\/p>\n

Figliozzi\u2019s\u00a0Worldwide Listening Guide<\/em>\u00a0is my go-to\u00a0for\u00a0programming\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0content,\u00a0<\/em>not only helpful on the shortwaves, but especially handy\u00a0when tracking\u00a0online content.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the WWLG is a unique guide–there’s nothing quite like it on the market. As I\u2019ve said, you may want a copy of the WWLG in your shack,\u00a0especially\u00a0alongside\u00a0your computer\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Wi-Fi radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

WWLG:\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Content DXers Guide<\/h2>\n

Like many SWLs, I\u2019m something of\u00a0a \u201cContent DXer:\u201d\u00a0I love chasing\u00a0obscure programming\u2013\u2013news, documentaries, music, and variety shows, anything the\u00a0broadcasting world has to offer. \u00a0For this,\u00a0I often turn to Wi-Fi radio. \u00a0Wi-Fi radio offers the discerning listener the ability to track down fascinating regional content from\u00a0every corner of the globe\u2013\u2013content never actually intended for an international audience.<\/p>\n

Digging into local content via a WiFi radio isn’t nearly as challenging or fun (for me, at least) as scanning the shortwave bands in search of elusive weak signal DX or pop-up pirate radio station. Though my WiFi radio offers an easy and reliable way to “tune” to online content, the actual content discovery part is quite difficult.<\/p>\n

Truth is, there\u2019s\u00a0so\u00a0much<\/em>\u00a0content out there–tens of thousands of stations and shows–it\u2019s hard to know where to start!<\/p>\n

This is where the\u00a0WWLG<\/em>\u00a0comes in:\u00a0Figliozzi exhaustively curates more than\u00a04,000 programs (!),<\/em>\u00a0indexing their airing times, stations, days of broadcast, program types, frequencies, and web addresses. Additionally, he\u00a0sorts the programs by genre: \u00a0arts, culture, history, music, sports, and more. And Figliozzi also includes\u00a0a well-thought-out directory of at least forty genres. \u00a0 In short,\u00a0this directory has helped me not just locate, but identify, programming I would never have known about otherwise.<\/p>\n

Frankly, I\u2019m not sure how\u00a0Figliozzi manages to curate such a vast assortment of programming. \u00a0But I\u2019m happy that he does, and especially, that he offers it for the SWL\u2019s\u00a0benefit\u2013\u2013!<\/p>\n

As I’ve said many time before, the\u00a0WWLG<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0has become a permanent reference book in my shack, alongside my trusty\u00a0WRTH.<\/em>\u00a0There\u2019s a surprising amount of information packed into this slim, spiral-bound book\u2026enough to keep even a seasoned content DXer happy for years.<\/p>\n
