As I mention every year, I look forward to receiving this excellent staple radio reference guide&#8211;and this\u00a0is their\u00a0<strong>72nd edition!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>WRTH\u2019<\/em>s team of noted DXers from around the world curate frequencies and broadcaster information by region; while I\u2019m not sure how they orchestrate all of this, the end result is truly a symphony of radio information. In addition to broadcaster listings, <em>WRTH<\/em>\u2019s radio reviews, feature articles, and annual HF report make for excellent reading.<\/p>\n<p>But the <em>WRTH<\/em> isn\u2019t <em>just<\/em> a frequency guide: the publication always devotes the first sixty\u00a0or so pages to articles relating to various aspects of the radio hobby. Reading about how Woxen became interested in radio and DXing reminds me of how I&#8211;and many of my radio friends&#8211;got their start as well.<\/p>\n<p>The second set of articles is always my favorite: <strong><em>WRTH<\/em> receiver reviews<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This year, <em>WRTH<\/em>\u00a0begins with a review of\u00a0the <strong>Icom IC-R8600 <\/strong>wideband tabletop SDR\u00a0receiver.\u00a0 They also review the <strong>Tecsun PL-880, Tecsun S-8800, Expert Electronics ColibriNano,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>SDRplay RSP2<\/strong>, and the new <strong>AOR AR-DV10<\/strong> wideband handheld<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29795\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/loop_antenna_latest_small-cross-country.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29795\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29795\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/loop_antenna_latest_small-cross-country.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/loop_antenna_latest_small-cross-country.jpg 320w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/loop_antenna_latest_small-cross-country-300x284.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-29795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo: Cross Country Wireless)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Besides radio reviews, WRTH also includes an evaluation of the <strong>Cross Country Wireless Active Loop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I must admit: the Cross Country sounds like an effective and affordable portable mag loop antenna. I might need to grab one in the future to use on impromptu travels and DXpeditions.<\/p>\n<p>The following article features WRTH contributor, <strong>Brian Clark<\/strong>, and his travels from New Zealand to the geographic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antipodes\">antipodes<\/a> of his home: Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Of course, enjoying diverse radio broadcasts was an integral part of his journey!<\/p>\n<p>I was pleased to find that the following feature article, entitled <strong>Receiving Noise<\/strong>, explores the radio interference that plagues our hobby<strong>. <\/strong>The article mentions several common sources of noise and some of the antennas that most effectively mitigate RFI. Sadly, radio noise\/interference is an important topic for most radio enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WRTH-2018-RRI.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-29801\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WRTH-2018-RRI-1024x718.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WRTH-2018-RRI-1024x718.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WRTH-2018-RRI-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WRTH-2018-RRI-768x538.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WRTH-2018-RRI-624x437.jpg 624w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WRTH-2018-RRI.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Following this, <em>WRTH<\/em>\u00a0writer, <strong>Hans Johnson<\/strong>, features an article on<strong> Radio Romania International<\/strong>. RRI is one of my favorite shortwave broadcasters, so this was a treat to find indeed&#8211;Johnson&#8217;s piece sheds light on the past, present and future of the station.<\/p>\n<p>Next, in <strong>A New Voice of Hope in the Middle East<\/strong>, Founder and President of the Strategic Communications Group,\u00a0<strong>John Taylor,<\/strong>\u00a0writes about setting up a new mediumwave station in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The following article features <strong>Dr. Martin Hadlaw<\/strong>, a former advisor to the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC), who explores the history of broadcasting in the South Seas.<\/p>\n<p>Next, WRTH feature their <b>Digital Update <\/b>which assesses the state of digital broadcasting and&#8211;this year a special note about&#8211;Digital Radio Mondiale.<\/p>\n<p>The final article\u2013a tradition\u2013is the WRTH \u00a0<strong>HF propagation report\/forecast <\/strong>by Ulf-Peter Hoppe. Always an informative read and this year he ends on a positive note despite the fact we&#8217;ve hit the solar rock-bottom!<\/p>\n<p>The 72nd is another fantastic edition of the <em>World Radio TV Handbook. <\/em>As I say every year,<em>\u00a0<\/em>I&#8217;ve never been disappointed with WRTH.
