The only modern portables I keep, regardless, are those I must have on hand for comparison testing and reviews. Since then, I&#8217;ve been selling this equipment and giving the proceeds to our non-profit (<a href=\"http:\/\/etow.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ETOW<\/a>). I&#8217;ve also donated a lot of equipment to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hickoryaviationmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hickory Aviation Museum\u00a0<\/a>in North Carolina\u2013\u2013I&#8217;m a member, and have been piecing together an\u00a0AN\/ARC-8 system for permanent display (only now lacking a good BC-348).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30098\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"901\" height=\"676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-12.jpg 901w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-12-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-12-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-12-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The only receiver I kept for myself was a <strong>National HRO-5TA1<\/strong>. These sets were initially manufactured during WWII under some large orders. Indeed, the &#8220;H.R.O.&#8221; acronym is said to be the National internal designation of the series&#8230;meaning, &#8220;Hellva Rush Order.&#8221; There were many variations of the National HRO; mine was the 1946 &#8220;5TA1.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30089\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-5.jpg 542w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/National-HRO-5TA1-5-241x300.jpg 241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The HRO-5TA1 uses coils to change bands. My HRO has the full set of coils and even the coil box. To change coils, you simply pull out (unplug) the coil from the front of the receiver and plug in a new one.<\/p>\n<p><a
