This was the ninth year in a row I made the pilgrimage to join my radio friends and family&#8211;it was certainly a \u2018Fest to be remembered!<\/p>\n<p>I made the trip by car, leaving Monday, February 26 and spent two nights in the DC area so that I could visit friends.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, I met with my buddy (and <em>SWLing Post<\/em> contributor) Dan Robinson and we headed over to the <a href=\"http:\/\/ncrtv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Capital Radio and Television Museum in Bowie, MD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31055\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/NCRTV-museum-e1520457381805.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31055\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31055\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/NCRTV-museum-e1520457381805.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The NCRTV Museum.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>NCRTV&#8217;s Brian Belanger gave us an excellent private tour of the museum, allowing me an opportunity to snap even more photos of this beautiful museum (<a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/a-photo-tour-of-the-national-capital-radio-and-television-museum\/\">you might recall the photo tour I posted in 2015<\/a>). Mark had just flown into DC from Sydney, Australia, the previous day.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing Mark is a huge fan of all things aviation, we made our way to <a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/udvar-hazy-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center<\/a> at Dulles Airport. This was my fourth visit to the museum, but Mark\u2019s first. But there are also constellations of satellites operating on VHF and UHF frequencies, easily received with standard communications receivers and antennas, and what you can hear on them can be very surprising. sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 968px) 100vw, 968px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Nor&#8217;easter and power outage<\/h2>\n<p>Of course, what everyone at the 2018 Winter SWL Fest will remember is that Friday morning, we were hit by a &#8220;nor&#8217;easter&#8221;&#8211;a storm with strong winds, and driving rain that by noon had turned to snow. Traffic outside the hotel was an absolute mess&#8211;and quite treacherous.<\/p>\n<p>It was a little crazy. Right around 2:30&#8211;only a minute after my presentation ended, the mains\/grid power flickered out.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31073\" style=\"width: 554px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hotel-Update-Noreaster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31073\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31073\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hotel-Update-Noreaster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"726\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hotel-Update-Noreaster.jpg 544w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hotel-Update-Noreaster-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The hotel staff kept everyone informed with news posts like this one.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fortunately, the hotel&#8217;s backup generator did power one set of outlets\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">in the conference room\u00a0which fed the projector and amplified speakers, so the show continued&#8230;<\/span>albeit<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0in the dark!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hotel-Update-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31074\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hotel-Update-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"726\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hotel-Update-2.jpg 544w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Hotel-Update-2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are advantages to being in a hotel with little power and much less RF noise&#8211;I was able to do some satisfactory MW DXing from my room window. A rare opportunity!<\/p>\n<p>We held the Saturday night banquet in the hotel&#8217;s atrium area which was was better lit that the interior conference rooms. It was a very memorable banquet.<\/p>\n<p>All-in-all, the Fest was a massive success. I heard <em>very<\/em> few complaints about the power outage, only praise for the forums, our guest speaker (Amanda Dawn Christie) and all of those who make the Fest a reality&#8211;especially John Figliozzi and Richard Cuff.<\/p>\n<p>If you couldn&#8217;t make the Fest this year due to your schedule (or the weather!), please come next year.
