Nairobi, Kenya | AFP | Burundi\u2019s press regulator on Friday said it was suspending broadcasts by the BBC and Voice of America (VOA) by local radio stations ahead of a constitutional referendum on May 17.<\/p>\n

The head of Burundi\u2019s National Communications Council told journalists in the capital Bujumbura that a six-month ban would come into force on Monday.<\/p>\n

Karenga Ramadhani accused the BBC and VOA of \u201cbreaches of the law governing the press and ethics\u201d.<\/p>\n

The BBC, he said, \u201cdamaged the reputation\u201d of President Pierre Nkurunziza during a discussion programme and had \u201cignored\u201d previous warnings.<\/p>\n

Burundi\u2019s government earlier this week urged the regulator to \u201ctake action\u201d against the BBC which it accused of spreading \u201cincendiary statements\u2026 hatred and subversion\u201d.<\/p>\n

VOA is accused of spreading \u201cvery tendentious\u201d information and hiring a journalist \u201csought by Burundian justice\u201d.<\/p>\n

French broadcaster RFI also received a warning for disseminating \u201ctendentious and misleading\u201d information.[…]<\/p>\n
