{"id":31983,"date":"2018-05-11T07:26:29","date_gmt":"2018-05-11T11:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=31983"},"modified":"2018-05-11T07:38:50","modified_gmt":"2018-05-11T11:38:50","slug":"this-weekend-historic-nss-call-sign-reactivated-during-armed-forces-day-crossband-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/this-weekend-historic-nss-call-sign-reactivated-during-armed-forces-day-crossband-test\/","title":{"rendered":"This weekend: Historic NSS Call Sign reactivated during Armed Forces Day Crossband Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_31984\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NSS-QSL-Card-NAVY-e1526037544401.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31984\" class=\"wp-image-31984 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NSS-QSL-Card-NAVY-e1526037544401.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"485\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">100th Anniversary QSL card for NSS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Many thanks to <em>SWLing Post<\/em> contributor, Brian Smith (W9IND), who shares the following press release regarding the historic U.S. Navy callsign NSS that will be reactivated during the 100th anniversary of the former Naval Radio Station in Annapolis, Maryland:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Historic NSS Call Sign to be Reactivated During its 100<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> Anniversary<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Historic U.S. Navy callsign NSS will be reactivated during the 100th anniversary of the former Naval Radio Station in Annapolis, Maryland. \u00a0The U.S. Naval Academy Radio Club (W3ADO) and the Potomac Valley Radio Club (W3GRF) will reactivate the historic callsign during the upcoming Armed Forces Day Crossband Military\/Amateur Radio Communications Test.<\/p>\n<p>NSS operations from the location of the former Naval Radio Station on Greenbury Point will be from 1300Z\u00a0Saturday May 12\u00a0to 0200Z May 13. \u00a0CW and SSB transmissions will be on 4038.5, 5330.5, 7533.5, 9447, 14487 and 17545 kHz. \u00a0NSS will listen for callers on announced frequencies in adjacent amateur bands.\u00a0 Commemorative QSLs will be sent for all QSOs.<\/p>\n<p>NSS began operations in 1918 as the Annapolis High Power Radio Station using a pair of Federal Telegraph Company 500 kilowatt Poulson Arc transmitters and four 600 foot towers operating in the Very Low Frequency (VLF) band. \u00a0At that time VLF provided the only known capability for trans-oceanic radio communications.
