Those are the words of the BBC\u2019s Chief Technology and Product Officer, the very nice Matthew Postgate, who made a long speech which the BBC has\u00a0reproduced on its press site<\/a>. Digital TV Europe excitedly reported it as the BBC\u00a0predicting an all-IP future<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I tweeted this last week, and it was retweeted heavily, with a lot of radio people posting \u201cI told you so!\u201d and \u201cI\u2019ve been saying this for ages!\u201d; and a few online radio companies jumped to self-promote themselves as part of the all-IP future.<\/p>\n

Calm down, everyone.<\/p>\n

First, as a former senior manager at the BBC, I\u2019d start with the seemingly trite statement that whenever you hear \u201cwe\u201d coming from a BBC manager in a speech, what they really mean is, firstly, \u201cmy department\u201d, and secondly, in most cases, they also mean \u201ctelevision\u201d. Indeed, there is no mention of radio in the section of Matthew\u2019s speech which talks about an all-IP future.<\/p>\n
