It, along with my <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/a-review-of-the-tecsun-pl-880-portable-shortwave-radio\/\">PL-880<\/a>, have become my main work horses for shortwave listening.<\/p>\n<p>The S-8800 is perfect on the desk connected to a wire antenna and the PL-880 is perfect for carrying around.<\/p>\n<p>Since I knew of the hidden features of the PL-880, it got me thinking on whether the S-8800 had any hidden features.<\/p>\n<p>A quick Google search turned up the following Web Page:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swli-05940-mi.blogspot.com\/2017\/03\/tecsun-s-8800-hidden-features.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/swli-05940-mi.blogspot.com\/2017\/03\/tecsun-s-8800-hidden-features.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used Google Translate to get a rough translation and then spent some time testing the features out and also just pressing and holding buttons to see if anything else showed up.<\/p>\n<p>Following is what I have come up with:<\/p>\n<p>(Note: some of these are in the manual)<\/p>\n<h2>With the radio off<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Toggle Longwave on\/off:\u00a0<\/strong>With the Radio OFF,\u00a0Press &amp; Hold 2<\/p>\n<p><strong>Toggle backlight permanently on\/off:<\/strong> With the Radio OFF, Press &amp; Hold 3\u00a0 &#8211; Note that this means the light will be on even when radio is off.\u00a0While the light does go out when radio is turned off, any operation of a control will turn the backlight on and it will then stay on.\u00a0Too bad they just didn\u2019t install a slide on\/off switch. Plus I know of no way to turn the backlight on permanently without the remote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Toggle Seconds display on\/off:<\/strong> With the Radio OFF,\u00a0 Press &amp; Hold 8<\/p>\n<p><strong>Displays \u201c0888\u201d:<\/strong>\u00a0Maybe this is version?: With the Radio OFF,\u00a0 Press &amp; Hold \u201cBack\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Displays all segments of display:<\/strong> With the Radio OFF, Press &amp; Hold \u201cAM NORM\u201d \u2013 Displays all segments of display. Press &amp; Hold again to display \u201cH802\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>With the radio on in FM mode<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Displays \u201c75US\u201d:<\/strong> With the radio ON, Press &amp; Hold 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>Squelch Setting:<\/strong> With the radio ON, Press &amp; Hold 9 \u2013 Range 0-5. Use Tuning Knob to set. Press 9 again to set.<\/p>\n<h2>With the radio on in SW\/AM mode<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Toggles Extended functions on\/off<\/strong>: With the radio ON, Press &amp; Hold 4<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>With extended functions on:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Press &amp; Hold 6 \u2013 Toggles DNR (Dynamic Noise Reduction) on\/off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Press &amp; Hold 9 \u2013 Squelch Setting. Use Tunng Know to Set. Press 9 again to set.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Squelch ranges:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">MW: 0-40<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">MW with USB\/LSB: 0-30<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SW: 0-25<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SW with USB\/LSB: 0-30<\/p>\n<p>So far that\u2019s all I\u2019ve been able to find.
