Florence is currently a category 2 hurricane, but they expect wind speeds to diminish quickly upon landfall. No doubt, we&#8217;ll remember Florence for the tremendous amount of rainfall she packs&#8211;there will be significant flooding in her path.<\/p>\n<p>A few readers have asked about frequencies to monitor as the storm approaches.<\/p>\n<h2>Hurricane Watch Net (HWN)<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hwn-hurricane-watch-net.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21687\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hwn-hurricane-watch-net.png\" alt=\"hwn-hurricane-watch-net\" width=\"165\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a>The Hurricane Watch Net is a group of amateur radio operators who are\u00a0trained and organized &#8220;to provide essential communications support to the National Hurricane Center during times of Hurricane emergencies.&#8221; The HWN focuses on &#8220;ground truth&#8221; observations (much like SkyWarn nets).<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Watch Net is activated\u00a0when a hurricane is within 300 statute miles of expected land-fall. The HWN covers the Caribbean, Central America, Eastern Mexico, Eastern Canada, and\u00a0all US Coastal States.<\/p>\n<p>The HWN operates in both\u00a0English and Spanish, and is active on <strong>14.325 MHz (upper sideband)<\/strong>\u00a0during the day and <strong>7.268 MHz (lower sideband) <\/strong>at night.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The HWN is known to operate on both frequencies if propagation allows.<\/p>\n<h2>Please keep HWN frequencies clear<\/h2>\n<p><em>If you&#8217;re an amateur radio operator, please avoid using 14.325 MHz and 7.268 MHz anytime the HWN has been activated.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Monitoring\u00a0hurricane frequencies<a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Digitech-AR-1780-keypad-closeup-radio-dial-e1515698199697.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-30160\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Digitech-AR-1780-keypad-closeup-radio-dial-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>If you have a shortwave radio with a BFO\/SSB mode&#8211;and you live within the propagation footprint&#8211;you can monitor the Hurricane Watch Net.<\/p>\n<p>Note that you&#8217;ll need to use upper sideband on 14.325 MHz and lower sideband on 7.268 MHz.<\/p>\n<p>You can also monitor the Hurricane Watch Net via a number of WebSDRs <a href=\"https:\/\/sdr.hu\/map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the KiwiSDR network<\/a> and even potentially via <a href=\"http:\/\/websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the U Twente WebSDR<\/a> in the Netherlands (although a WebSDR in North America would be preferable).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hwn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to view the Hurricane Watch Net website.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Active-storms.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34164\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Active-storms.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Active-storms.png 900w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Active-storms-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Active-storms-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Active-storms-624x417.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At time of posting, there are a number of tropical storms in the Atlantic.
