It arrives annually&#8211;without fail&#8211;just prior to my Christmas holiday travels.<\/p>\n<p>I look forward to receiving this excellent staple radio reference guide&#8211;and this\u00a0is their\u00a0<strong>73rd edition! <\/strong>The WRTH has never disappointed, so my expectations are always quite high.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, the WRTH lived up to my expectations.<\/p>\n<p><em>WRTH\u2019<\/em>s team of noted DXers from around the world curate frequencies and broadcaster information by region; while I\u2019m not sure how they orchestrate all of this, the end result is truly a symphony of radio information. In addition to broadcaster listings, <em>WRTH<\/em>\u2019s radio reviews, feature articles, and annual HF report make for excellent reading.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WRTH-Frequency.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35275 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WRTH-Frequency-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the <em>WRTH<\/em> isn\u2019t <em>just<\/em> a frequency guide: the publication always devotes the first sixty\u00a0or so pages to articles relating to various aspects of the radio hobby. Following, I offer a quick overview of these.<\/p>\n<p>The first article always features a <strong><em>WRTH<\/em><\/strong><strong> contributor<\/strong>:\u00a0 this year, they feature <strong>Kai Ludwig\u00a0<\/strong>who is their contributor for Germany. His lifelong passion for international broadcasting started in what was then East Germany&#8211;he watched with interest as the broadcasting world change around him as the Iron Curtain fell.<\/p>\n<p>The second set of articles is always my favorite: <strong><em>WRTH<\/em><\/strong><strong> receiver reviews<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29443\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Airspy-HF-Plus-Receiver.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29443\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29443\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Airspy-HF-Plus-Receiver.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Airspy-HF-Plus-Receiver.jpg 800w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Airspy-HF-Plus-Receiver-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Airspy-HF-Plus-Receiver-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Airspy-HF-Plus-Receiver-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-29443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The AirSpy HF+ SDR<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This year, <em>WRTH<\/em>\u00a0begins with a review of\u00a0the <strong>WinRadio Excalibur Sigma<\/strong>\u00a0SDR\u00a0receiver&#8211;which essentially set a new benchmark.\u00a0 They also review the <strong>SDRplay RSPduo, AirSpy HF+<\/strong> (which truly impressed),<strong> the Reuter RDR51 &#8220;Pocket&#8221; SDR, XHDATA D-808 <\/strong>and the new <strong>Icom IC-R30<\/strong> wideband handheld<strong>.\u00a0 <\/strong>What I love about the WRTH review selection is they span products ranging from \u00a370 all the way up to\u00a0\u00a36200! Certainly, choices for everyone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/VOA-Greenville-Curtain-Antennas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10413\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/VOA-Greenville-Curtain-Antennas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/VOA-Greenville-Curtain-Antennas.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/VOA-Greenville-Curtain-Antennas-300x130.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/VOA-Greenville-Curtain-Antennas-100x43.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next feature article, written by none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/tag\/dave-porter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dave Porter,<\/a>\u00a0focuses on curtain antennas&#8211;the true work horses of international broadcasting. His article speaks to the history and theory behind curtains and notes several types often used by international broadcasters. A must-read!<\/p>\n<p>Hans Johnson&#8217;s feature, <em>Broadcasting For Peace<\/em>, tells the inspiring story of how two stations with one mission helped promote peace in a troubled region of Africa. It truly is amazing how these stations gave their listeners a voice and hope.<\/p>\n<p>The following article highlights a broadcaster on the opposite side of the globe: V7AB in the Marshall Islands. For this feature, journalist Mika M\u00e4kel\u00e4inen traveled to the Marshall Islands and visited this powerful national AM broadcaster.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_0949-e1545397705978.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-35276\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_0949-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of powerful broadcasters, TWR Broadcast Engineer, Dave Pedersen, authors an article outlining the reasons for and challenges of operating and maintaining TWR&#8217;s Bonaire MW transmitting station.<\/p>\n<p>Next, WRTH spotlight the annual\u00a0<strong>Digital Update <\/strong>which summarizes the dynamic state of digital broadcasting. I&#8217;ve found this feature to be incredibly informative as we see how digital broadcasting is penetrating both domestic and international services.<\/p>\n<p>The final article\u2013a tradition\u2013is the WRTH \u00a0<strong>HF propagation report\/forecast <\/strong>by Ulf-Peter Hoppe. Always an informative read despite the fact we&#8217;re in a solar low!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WRTH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35277\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WRTH.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"847\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WRTH.jpg 635w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WRTH-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/WRTH-624x832.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 73rd is another fantastic edition of the <em>World Radio TV Handbook. <\/em>As I say every year,<em>\u00a0<\/em>I&#8217;ve never been disappointed with WRTH. Their publishing standards are such that the quality of their reviews, their writing, and (most importantly) their broadcast listings are simply unparalleled.<\/p>\n<p>For DXers who collect QSL cards, you\u2019ll find that broadcaster contact information in <em>WRTH<\/em> is often more up-to-date than a broadcaster\u2019s own website. When readers contact me asking for QSL information from an obscure broadcaster, the first place I search is the current WRTH.
