The person who sets the prices for electronics always over-inflates them so it seems items sit on the shelf for ages.<\/p>\n<p>In all of the years I&#8217;ve visited this store, I&#8217;ve never found a portable radio of interest&#8230;until a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>As I passed by the shelf, a <strong>GE Super Radio II<\/strong> caught my eye. Cosmetically, it was in rough shape (in other words, &#8220;well-loved&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>I expected a $50 price tag but instead was surprised when I saw $2.50! I put on my reading glasses just to make sure I was reading it correctly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36618\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"869\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-5.jpg 869w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-5-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-5-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-5-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 869px) 100vw, 869px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I plugged the radio in and tested it on FM. It easily snagged a number of FM stations and the audio sounded amazing although the loudness, treble and bass pots were very scratchy.<\/p>\n<p>The AM broadcast band worked as well, but the RFI\/noise inside the retail warehouse was overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36619\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-4.jpg 489w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-4-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I opened the back of the radio and found an immaculate battery compartment. Obviously, the previous owner was either diligent with removing cells when not in use, or never used batteries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-36616\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-7-1024x579.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-7-1024x579.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-7-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-7-768x434.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-7-624x353.jpg 624w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-7.jpg 1153w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The antenna was in great shape and had no bends or breaks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36617\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-6.jpg 672w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-6-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-6-624x605.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The speakers were in tact as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36620\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"869\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-3.jpg 869w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-3-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 869px) 100vw, 869px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I took the radio to the counter and the guy who rang up the order said, &#8220;<em>Well&#8230;she ain&#8217;t pretty, but for $2.50 how can you go wrong?<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My thoughts exactly!<\/p>\n<p>I brought the Super Radio II home with the idea of immediately cleaning her up (<a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/dks-barn-find-a-ge-super-radio-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like David Korchin did with his &#8220;barn find&#8221; II<\/a>), but I&#8217;ve had a couple intense travel and work weeks, so it had to wait.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward to yesterday when my father-in-law was in town and stopped by for a visit.<\/p>\n<p>He mentioned in passing that after his favorite public radio station decreased power from one of its translators, he could no longer receive it easily with his small AM\/FM portable at home. Of course, I have at least four dozen radios here that could easily receive this station, but few of those include a power cord, are incredibly simple to operate and have room-filling audio.<\/p>\n<p>I took a look at the GE Super Radio II, then a look at my father-in-law, and decided he needed it. I knew the &#8216;Super II would make him a happy man.<\/p>\n<p>I quickly dusted off the chassis and cleaned the pots with DeOxit&#8211;it played like a new one.<\/p>\n<p>I tuned to an FM station playing classical music, turned up the volume and my father-in-law beamed when he heard the rich, clear audio.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt, this time-honored portable will get a lot of use and love in its second life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36621\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"869\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-2.jpg 869w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GE-Super-Radio-II-2-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 869px) 100vw, 869px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If I&#8217;m being honest with myself, this might not have been a truly altruistic move.
