{"id":36893,"date":"2019-04-11T07:32:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T11:32:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=36893"},"modified":"2019-04-11T07:32:56","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T11:32:56","slug":"hear-my-voice-radios-role-in-hitlers-annexation-of-the-sudetenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/hear-my-voice-radios-role-in-hitlers-annexation-of-the-sudetenland\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear My Voice: Radio&#8217;s role in Hitler&#8217;s annexation of the Sudetenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Hear-My-Voice-David-Vaughan-e1554982193751.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-36897\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Hear-My-Voice-David-Vaughan-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"833\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/david-vaughan-on-czech-radio-and-the-role-of-propaganda-leading-up-to-wwii\/\">In January<\/a>, when I first heard about David Vaughan\u2019s book <strong><em>Hear My Voice<\/em><\/strong>, I knew then and there I would have to read it. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2D4kNN5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">So I picked up a copy on Amazon<\/a> with the intention of doing so&#8230;well, soon.<\/p>\n<p>However, I\u2019ve got quite a number of books in my to-be-read stack at the moment, so Hear My Voice lay in wait on my bookshelf until this past Sunday, when I decided to read the first chapter\u2013\u2013just to get a taste of it.<\/p>\n<p>Although I had a very busy day in store\u2013\u2013working on a home renovation and making several trips into town\u2013\u2013nevertheless I struggled to pull it from the stack, and having rapidly consumed the first chapters, had a hard time putting the book down. By the day\u2019s end, I found I had read the entire book.<\/p>\n<p>While those who know me know I\u2019m a bit of a WWII history buff, I only knew that Hitler\u2019s seizure of the Czech Sudetenland was but a hint of what was to come. The history I\u2019d read previously had provided a bit of insight into this crucial lead-up to the war, but not as Vaughan\u2019s book does: in what feels like a first hand account, through the eyes of an interpreter and broadcaster. I was hooked.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hear My Voice<\/em> clearly indicates how transformative the medium of radio was in this era, and how deliberate and insidious Nazi propaganda became in the Sudetenland years before Czechoslovakia ever took notice.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, it\u2019s a great read.
