Very interesting on the challenges facing CBC and radio\/tv in general:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/thesundayedition\/cbc-president-catherine-tait-on-trust-raising-money-and-attracting-a-younger-audience-1.5157200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBC Radio)<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is the job of the CBC to build social cohesion in Canada, according to CBC\/Radio-Canada\u00a0president and CEO Catherine Tait, but\u00a0&#8220;we also have an obligation to run a business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The longtime Canadian television and film executive told Michael Enright, host of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/thesundayedition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Sunday Edition<\/em><\/a>, that her experience will help with that goal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think it was a surprise that I was selected\u00a0as an entrepreneur\u00a0to run this corporation, to try and find ways to uncover revenue that we might not have considered as possible for the public broadcaster,&#8221;\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p>The CBC depends on the government for about 70 per cent of its budget. It has never had stable, long-term funding. Budgets ebb and flow because they&#8217;re decided by the government of the day.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to financial support for public broadcasting,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/statistics\/Better-Life-Initiative-country-note-Canada.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada ranks third-lowest<\/a>\u00a0among Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. The average per capita funding is $90 \u2014 in Canada, it&#8217;s $34.<\/p>\n<p>About a year into her mandate, Tait revealed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cbc.radio-canada.ca\/en\/vision\/strategy\/your-stories-taken-to-heart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new strategic plan<\/a> to guide the CBC through a period of unparalleled media competition, over the next three years.[&#8230;]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/thesundayedition\/cbc-president-catherine-tait-on-trust-raising-money-and-attracting-a-younger-audience-1.5157200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here to listen to the full interview on Sunday Edition.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Bill (WD9EQD), who notes: [Recently] the Radio Canada program Sunday Edition had an interview with CBC President Catherine Tait.
