From October 19th until November 12th,\u00a0Radio Free Europe<\/a>\u2018s (RFE) Hungarian broadcast recorded around and during the 1956 Revolution can be listened to online, exactly how it was aired 63 years ago minute by minute, HVG\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Hungarian broadcast of RFE\u2019s 1956 program that was aired on shortwave, through foreign transmitters, was recorded at the repeater stations, and has been preserved thanks to the German government\u2019s examination of the radio\u2019s role in the revolution, launched after the events.<\/p>\n

After the inquiry, however, the footage, consisting of 60 tapes, was concealed in a basement for decades, until it was rediscovered in the 90s, transferred to cassettes, and digitized.<\/p>\n

In the framework of the First University Radio\u00a0in\u00a0Pest\u2019s (Els? Pesti Egyetemi R\u00e1di\u00f3- EPER) voice memorial project dubbed \u201cSZER56\u201d (derived from the radio\u2019s Hungarian name: Szabad Eur\u00f3pa R\u00e1di\u00f3), people can hear (once again) these recordings. The recordings were restored, digitized, and published by the National Sz\u00e9ch\u00e9nyi Library (OSZK), which EPER then restored to the original broadcast session.<\/p>\n

The footage includes four days that preceded the outbreak of the Revolution, making it the only available recording that preserved the 50s\u2019 \u201cevery day\u201d shows. Moreover, this would be the first time the public can hear this outstanding piece of media history. In addition to political broadcasts, the recordings include radio plays, musical compositions, and even quizzes.<\/p>\n

The \u201cbroadcast\u201d will be available from Saturday on\u00a0eper.elte.hu<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
