For SRL construction details, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kk5jy.net\/rx-loop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">check out Matt&#8217;s primer<\/a>.<\/b><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>The Porch Loop<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>by Matt Roberts (KK5JY)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kk5jy.net\/rx-loop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">small receiving loop<\/a>, or SRL, is a versatile, effective, and very space-efficient receive-optimized antenna for the HF bands.\u00a0 They are easy to build, and can be made very inexpensively.\u00a0 Most typical designs use symmetric shapes, like circles, diamonds, octagons, etc., and are mounted on some kind of mast.\u00a0 This makes it easy(-ier) to install the antenna clear of nearby metal and electronics.\u00a0 It also makes the antenna rotatable, so that the nulls can be pointed at RFI sources.<\/p>\n<p>These aren&#8217;t the only options for the SRL, however.\u00a0 These little loops can be made to fit in just about any available space.\u00a0 In fact:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are effective at any reasonable installation height, including very close to the ground.\u00a0 The installation height doesn&#8217;t change the pattern\u00a0<i>shape<\/i>, only the pattern\u00a0<i>strength<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>They can be made nearly any shape.\u00a0 The shape does not have to be symmetric about any axis or combination of axes.<\/li>\n<li>They can be fed at just about any point on the loop.\u00a0 A typical feed location is bottom-center, but off-center feeding has negligible effect on the pattern shape.<\/li>\n<li>The wire can be bent out-of-plane; in other words, the loop doesn&#8217;t have to be &#8220;flat.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u00a0<i>are<\/i>\u00a0a couple of requirements for obtaining predictable performance, however.\u00a0 First, the antenna does need to be an electrical\u00a0<i>loop.<\/i>\u00a0 That is, it is a single wire connected between the conductors of the feedline, forming a complete circuit.\u00a0 Also, the circumference of the loop wire should be electrically small (i.e., significantly less than ? \/ 4) on the bands where it is to be used.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43512\" style=\"width: 1040px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/house-Porch-Loop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43512\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43512\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/house-Porch-Loop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1030\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/house-Porch-Loop.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/house-Porch-Loop-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/house-Porch-Loop-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/house-Porch-Loop-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/house-Porch-Loop-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1. The antenna location (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a personal challenge, I recently installed such a loop on my front porch.\u00a0 Everything about this installation defies conventional wisdom \u2014 it was installed very close to the ground, it was an irregular shape, it was fed off-center, and the wire was wound in and around an irregular support structure, rather having all the wire in a single plane.<\/p>\n<p>And the resulting antenna still performed very well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43513\" style=\"width: 1040px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/outline-Porch-Loop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43513\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43513\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/outline-Porch-Loop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1030\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/outline-Porch-Loop.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/outline-Porch-Loop-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/outline-Porch-Loop-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/outline-Porch-Loop-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/outline-Porch-Loop-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2: Antenna Location Outlined in Red (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The loop is essentially the same device as the one in the original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kk5jy.net\/rx-loop\/\">SRL<\/a>\u00a0article.\u00a0 See that article for more construction details.\u00a0 This version is simply stretched and twisted to make it fit the space and supports available.\u00a0 The wire was woven around the boards in the porch&#8217;s deck rail, and fed off to one side, so that the transformer housing could be &#8220;hidden&#8221; behind the trash cans.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43514\" style=\"width: 732px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/feedpoint-transformer-Porch-Loop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43514\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43514\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/feedpoint-transformer-Porch-Loop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"722\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/feedpoint-transformer-Porch-Loop.jpg 722w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/feedpoint-transformer-Porch-Loop-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/feedpoint-transformer-Porch-Loop-624x438.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 3: Feedpoint Transformer (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The wire was insulated with an off-white THHN, which made it blend in with the color of the trim of the house.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43515\" style=\"width: 839px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/40m-10h-Porch-Loop-results.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43515\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43515\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/40m-10h-Porch-Loop-results.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"829\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/40m-10h-Porch-Loop-results.png 829w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/40m-10h-Porch-Loop-results-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/40m-10h-Porch-Loop-results-768x458.png 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/40m-10h-Porch-Loop-results-624x372.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 829px) 100vw, 829px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 4: 40m Reception 10h Overnight (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even with its suboptimal installation details, the overnight 40m DX spots were numerous and well-distributed, as seen in <b>Figure\u00a04<\/b>.\u00a0 There were DX spots at nearly 10,000 miles, there were NVIS spots, and there were countless at all distances in between.\u00a0 So the antenna was just as effective as its more ideally shaped brethren, despite it&#8217;s unconventional installation details.<\/p>\n<p>Other ideas for possible locations of such a device could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In an attic.\u00a0 The antenna could be nailed to a vertical panel, or strung like a spider&#8217;s web inside the frame of a truss or other open area.<\/li>\n<li>Under a tree.\u00a0 Taking another idea from the spiders, the antenna could be hung and pulled into shape using light guys or tree branches.<\/li>\n<li>On a wooden fence.\u00a0 If you have a wooden fence, the antenna could be installed against the fence panels.\u00a0 This option could allow a wide range of circumference lengths.<\/li>\n<li>Attached to an interior wall of an apartment.\u00a0 The shape could be chosen to keep the loop clear of in-wall wiring, to help preserve its performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The original mast-mounted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kk5jy.net\/rx-loop\/\">SRL<\/a>\u00a0antennas still have some advantages.\u00a0 Perhaps the biggest advantage is that they can be easily rotated to null out a nearby strong noise source.\u00a0 That said, if you are looking for an antenna with better receive performance than a large resonant vertical, the SRL can be stretched and squeezed into service just about anywhere.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><strong>Many thanks for sharing this project, Matt!\u00a0 So many of our readers live in situations where they are forced to use stealthy and compromised antennas.
