Hacker Used \u00a3270 of TV Equipment to Eavesdrop on Sensitive Satellite Communications (CBRonline.com)<\/a><\/h3>\n

\u201cVulnerable systems administration pages and FTP servers were publicly routable from the open internet.<\/p>\n

An Oxford University-based security researcher says he used \u00a3270 ($300) of home television equipment to capture terabytes of real-world satellite traffic \u2014 including sensitive data from \u201csome of the world\u2019s largest organisations.\u201d<\/p>\n

James Pavur, a Rhodes Scholar and DPhil student at Oxford, will detail the attack in a session at the Black Hat security conference in early August.<\/p>\n

Pavur will also demonstrate that, \u201cunder the right conditions\u201d attackers can hijack active sessions via satellite link, a session\u00a0overview<\/a>\u00a0reveals.<\/p>\n

The news comes as the number of satellites in orbit is expected to increase from approximately 2,000 today to more than 15,000 by 2030. (Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX alone has\u00a0permission<\/a> to launch 12,000 satellites.)[…<\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
