Since <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/the-lab599-discovery-tx-500-ruggedized-portable-qrp-transceiver\/\">its announcement around this time last year<\/a>, a number of radio enthusiasts have been seeking <em>any<\/em> updates or information regarding price and availability.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Discovery-TX-500-QRP-Transceiver-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38312\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Discovery-TX-500-QRP-Transceiver-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"562\" height=\"706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Discovery-TX-500-QRP-Transceiver-5.jpg 562w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Discovery-TX-500-QRP-Transceiver-5-239x300.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spoiler alert:<\/strong> Sadly, I have no meaningful updates at present.<\/p>\n<h1>Here&#8217;s what I do know&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>The product page for the TX-500 now has more photos and specifications. They also added a downloads page with the manual, software, and firmware.<em> [Update: I removed links to these pages because some systems report that the site may have gotten a malware injection&#8211;common with WordPress sites.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many of you have asked if the TX-500 will be &#8220;vaporware.&#8221;\u00a0 Possibly, but I don&#8217;t believe so. I suspect lab599 is keeping everything under wraps until they have firm information regarding availability and pricing. I&#8217;m actually happy they haven&#8217;t asked for pre-orders with cash deposits because that always adds a layer of risk with products that are not yet in production. At this point, no consumers have an investment riding on this future rig.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I imagine the Covid-19 pandemic could also affect their supply chain.<\/p>\n<h1>Videos<\/h1>\n<p>There have been two new videos posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCju5qUmLJlqaLdMz2xzM81A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on the lab599 YouTube page<\/a> this month.<\/p>\n<p>The first video shows the TX-500 in the field and the operator (R9JC) making a contact in CW:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eenvxnrTsQc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The second video shows the TX-500 display as the operator tunes through the CW portion of the 20 meter band with the 50 Hz filter engaged:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZNLocuvURzQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Following TX-500 updates closely&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>I am following TX-500 updates <em>very<\/em> closely. Since I&#8217;m primarily a <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/snagging-two-state-game-lands-in-three-days-for-parks-on-the-air\/\">&#8220;field&#8221;<\/a> ham radio operator, the idea of a weather-proof, rugged, QRP transceiver is <em>very<\/em> appealing.\u00a0 Seriously&#8230;<strong><em>just take my money!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, being first and foremost a shortwave radio listener, I&#8217;m also very interested how the TX-500 might play on the broadcast bands in AM mode.<\/p>\n<p>You can bet I will review the TX-500 as soon as it&#8217;s available.<\/p>\n<p>I recently sent another inquiry to lab599.
