I&#8217;ve taken it on <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/taking-the-xiegu-g90-qrp-transceiver-to-the-field\/\">a number of portable field operations<\/a> and love it. My full review of the G90 will appear in the August 2020 issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespectrummonitor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Spectrum Monitor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that at time of posting (July 21, 2020) no one has really reviewed and compared the performance of a production run IC-705 with any other radio as of yet. I will purchase an IC-705 for review as soon as they start shipping in the US, but I don&#8217;t expect to be able to do that until September or October at best. So we can&#8217;t really speak about performance at this point.<\/p>\n<p>What makes the IC-705 unique in the portable radio market is the number of features it will sport.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Icom-IC-705.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39392\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Icom-IC-705.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Icom-IC-705.jpg 597w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Icom-IC-705-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a short list of features the <strong>Icom IC-705<\/strong> has that the Xiegu G90 does <em>not<\/em> have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attachable battery pack<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/new-icom-ic-705-videos-and-few-answers-to-your-questions\/\">Lower current drain in receive<\/a> per Icom specifications<\/li>\n<li>CW memory keyer with beacon mode<\/li>\n<li>Voice memory keyer with beacon mode<\/li>\n<li>D-Star mode with built-in WiFi to connect to Internet\/hotspot<\/li>\n<li>Built-in GPS<\/li>\n<li>Built-in TX\/RX recording<\/li>\n<li>Broader receive range: 0.030\u2013199.999 and 400.000\u2013470.000 MHz<\/li>\n<li>Multi-mode 6M\/2M\/70CM TX and RX<\/li>\n<li>Touch screen display that is customizable<\/li>\n<li>Built-in WiFi and Bluetooth<\/li>\n<li>Native to digital modes&#8211;no external sound card interface needed<\/li>\n<li>Frequency stability less than 0.5 +\/- ppm in VHF\/UHF, making it ideal to drive an amplifier for demanding tasks like EME<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Xiegu-G90-Encoder-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44132\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Xiegu-G90-Encoder-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Xiegu-G90-Encoder-1.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Xiegu-G90-Encoder-1-300x182.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Xiegu-G90-Encoder-1-768x466.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Xiegu-G90-Encoder-1-624x379.jpeg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Xiegu G90<\/strong> actually has a few features that the Icom IC-705 will not:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Built-in (very effective) automatic antenna tuner<\/li>\n<li>Antenna analyzer function [Update: Geoff notes &#8220;The Icom IC 705 does also have a VSWR Plot\/analyser in the menu same as the IC7300 and iC 7100, page 9.3 in the advanced IC 705 manual&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>20 watts of output power (the IC-705 has a max output power of 10 watts using an external 13.8V battery source)<\/li>\n<li>10.8 kHz AM bandwidth (the IC-705 maxes out at 6 kHz per specs)<\/li>\n<li>Detachable faceplate which will likely make mounting it mobile even a little easier than the IC-705 (although in truth both transceivers are very compact and should be easy to mount)<\/li>\n<li>Side panels that protect the front faceplate and rear connections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the end of the day, though, the Xiegu G90 is an excellent little <strong>budget<\/strong> transceiver. It&#8217;s feature-rich compared with other transceivers in this price bracket, but basic compared with the IC-705 or <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/a-review-of-the-elecraft-kx3-a-world-class-transceiver-superb-shortwave-receiver\/\">Elecraft KX3<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/a-review-of-the-elecraft-kx2-general-coverage-qrp-transceiver\/\">KX2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Icom IC-705 will have a retail cost <em>well<\/em> over two times that of the G90 but will sport features that no other QRP transceiver has up to this point. In fact, the list of features above is only a sampling.<\/p>\n<p>If none of the unique features of the IC-705 appeal or apply to you and your operating style, save a little money and grab the G90.
