I think most of us can agree that 2020 will be one for the history books, in large part due to the Covid-19 global pandemic which has had a pretty dramatic affect on many of our lives. It certainly brough my planned travels to a halt. I think many of us are quite happy to show 2020 the door!<\/p>\n<p>As each year comes to a conclusion, I often look back at my radio activities during that year and see how it played out. I especially note the radios I used most heavily throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Since I evaluate and test radios, models that are new to the market obviously get a lot of air time. I see the Belka DX getting much more air time in the future because <strong>1.)<\/strong> it&#8217;s a performer (golly&#8211;just check out <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/state-of-the-art-spy-radio-a-comprehensive-review-of-the-belka-dsp-portable-shortwave-receiver\/\">13dka&#8217;s review of the Belka DSP<\/a>) and <strong>2.)<\/strong> it&#8217;s incredibly compact. The Belka now lives in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redoxx.com\/c-c-rider-91086\/p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EDC bag<\/a>, so is with me for impromptu listening and DXing sessions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Panasonic-RF-B65-Top-e1533476420360.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33407\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Panasonic-RF-B65-Top-e1533476420360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"733\" \/><\/a>A classic solid-state portable that also got a lot of air time this year was the <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/the-panasonic-rf-b65-the-legendary-portable-with-a-cult-following-amongst-dxers\/\"><strong>Panasonic RF-B65<\/strong><\/a>. Not only is it a performer, but it has a &#8220;cool&#8221; factor that&#8217;s hard to describe. I love it.<\/p>\n<h1>Tabletop portables<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CCrane-CCRadio3-AM-dial-Backlit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36060\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CCrane-CCRadio3-AM-dial-Backlit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CCrane-CCRadio3-AM-dial-Backlit.jpg 767w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CCrane-CCRadio3-AM-dial-Backlit-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/CCrane-CCRadio3-AM-dial-Backlit-624x531.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px\" \/><\/a>In a sense, the <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/preview-the-c-crane-ccradio3-am-fm-wx-and-2-meter-receiver\/\"><strong>C.Crane CCradio3<\/strong><\/a> got more play time than any of my radios.\u00a0 It sits in a corner of our living area where we tune to FM, AM and weather radio&#8211;90% of the time, though, it&#8217;s either in AUX mode playing audio piped from my SiriusXM receiver, or in Bluetooth mode playing from one of our phones, tables, or computers. In October, the prototype <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2020\/12\/a-first-look-at-the-new-c-crane-ccradio-solar-portable-sel-powered-am-fm-weather-radio\/\"><strong>CCRadio Solar<\/strong><\/a> took over SiriusXM duty brilliantly. It now lives above my computer monitor, so within easy reach. Although it&#8217;s capable of 100+ watts out, I rarely take it above 10 watts. Not only is it the most full-featured transceiver I&#8217;ve ever owned, but it&#8217;s also a brillant <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2020\/10\/taking-the-icom-ic-705-on-a-shortwave-and-mediumwave-field-trip\/\">SWLing broadcast receiver<\/a>. With built-in audio recording, it&#8217;s a fabulous field radio.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Elecraft-AX1-and-KX2-POTA-Activation-13-e1605185781590.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46443\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Elecraft-AX1-and-KX2-POTA-Activation-13-e1605185781590.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1067\" \/><\/a>Still, the <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/a-review-of-the-elecraft-kx2-general-coverage-qrp-transceiver\/\"><strong>Elecraft KX2<\/strong><\/a> remains my choice field radio for its portability, versatility and incredibly compact size. This year, in particular, I&#8217;ve had a blast pairing the KX2 with the super-portable <strong>Elecraft AX1<\/strong> antenna for quick field activations.
