Normally, I&#8217;d receive this annual guide in the December time frame, but because of delays in international postal services due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I took delivery a few weeks late. <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">I always look forward to receiving this excellent staple radio reference guide\u2013and this is their <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">75th edition! <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">As I say each year, the WRTH has never disappointed, so my expectations are always quite high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-2-e1612533179858.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47646\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-2-e1612533179858.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once again, the WRTH lived up to my expectations.<\/p>\n<p><em>WRTH\u2019<\/em>s team of noted DXers from around the world curate frequencies and broadcaster information by region; while I\u2019m not sure how they orchestrate all of this, the end result is truly a symphony of radio information. In addition to broadcaster listings,\u00a0<em>WRTH<\/em>\u2019s radio reviews, feature articles, and annual HF report make for excellent reading.<\/p>\n<p>But the\u00a0<em>WRTH<\/em>\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0<em>just<\/em>\u00a0a frequency guide: the publication always devotes the first sixty\u00a0or so pages to articles relating to various aspects of the radio hobby. Following, I offer a quick overview of these.<\/p>\n<p>The first article always features a\u00a0<strong><em>WRTH<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0contributor<\/strong>:\u00a0 this year, they feature\u00a0<strong>Stig Hartvig Nielson<\/strong>. His path to becoming a WRTH contributor began in his childhood when he said he was &#8220;tall enough to reach the radio tuning knob and tune away from dull Radio Denmark.&#8221;\u00a0 His love of radio lead him down the path of becoming a broadcaster. Many of us know him via his station, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radio208.dk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Radio208<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>WRTH Reviews<\/h1>\n<p>The second set of articles is always my favorite:\u00a0<strong><em>WRTH<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0receiver reviews<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-3-e1612533203531.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47645\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-3-e1612533203531.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year,\u00a0<em>WRTH<\/em> begins with an in-depth review of the <strong>AOR AR5700D<\/strong> wideband communications receiver&#8211;a radio I&#8217;d likely never touch in real-life, so it&#8217;s wonderful to take such a deep dive.\u00a0 Next up is a review of the <strong>Bonito NTi MegaDipol MD300DX<\/strong> antenna which gets high marks for high gain, low noise, and good dynamic range. The following in-depth review is of the benchmark <strong>Icom IC-7610<\/strong> general coverage transceiver. This was the first time I&#8217;ve read a review of this SDR transceiver with radio listeners in mind. WRTH then review the <strong>Bonito NTi CCMC30<\/strong> common mode noise filter&#8211;a tool that can help radio enthusiasts mitigate RFI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-4-e1612533225502.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47644\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-4-e1612533225502.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A review of the <strong>SDRplay RSPdx<\/strong> follows and the review speaks to the performance improvements included with the new HDR mode. The next review is actually one I authored of the <strong>Tecsun PL-990<\/strong> portable radio&#8211;it&#8217;s always an honor to be in the pages of the WRTH!<\/p>\n<p>The final review is of the <strong>Valent F(x) KiwiSDR<\/strong>; a little web-connected SDR receiver that has certainly transformed the nature and accessibility of remote listening.<\/p>\n<h1>WRTH Features<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-5-e1612533247771.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-47642 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-5-300x214.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a>The first feature article, written by none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/tag\/dave-porter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Porter,<\/a> focuses on the development of HF broadcast transmitters. This article adds to the one he authored last year which focused on broadcast antennas. Dave is amazing because he has such an extensive history in the world of HF broadcasting and his experience and expertise are obvious in all of his writing. This is a must-read for those who want to know more about the &#8220;business side&#8221; of an international broadcast signal!<\/p>\n<p>Manfred Rippich\u2019s feature, <strong>Radio in Bhutan<\/strong>, explores the story of broadcasting in one of the most mountainous countries in the world where communities&#8211;including the capitol&#8211;are not easily accessible. Radio broadcasting plays an important role in this amazing country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-6-e1612533283337.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47641\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-6-e1612533283337.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The following feature, <strong>Coastwatchers &amp; the AWA Teleradio 3BZ<\/strong> written by Dr Martin Hadlow, takes a look at the importance of portable radios in the Pacific War. An absolutely fascinating piece for those of us who love radio history.<\/p>\n<p>The final feature was written by Alan Pennington and explores the dynamic <strong>Scandinavian Weekend Radio<\/strong>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to believe SWR has celebrated 20 years on the air as of 2020. Pennington&#8217;s article explores the grassroots energy of this unique broadcaster!<\/p>\n<p>The final article\u2013a tradition\u2013is the WRTH \u00a0<strong>HF propagation report\/forecast\u00a0<\/strong>by Ulf-Peter Hoppe. Always an informative read especially as we continue to work our way out of a long-term solar slump.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-7-e1612533313259.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47640\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-WRTH-7-e1612533313259.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"440\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 75th is another fantastic edition of the <em>World Radio TV Handbook.\u00a0<\/em>As I say every year,<em>\u00a0<\/em>I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> been disappointed with WRTH. <strong>Their publishing standards are such that the quality of their reviews, their writing, and (most importantly) their broadcast listings are simply unparalleled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For DXers who collect QSL cards, you\u2019ll find that broadcaster contact information in\u00a0<em>WRTH<\/em>\u00a0is often more up-to-date than a broadcaster\u2019s own website.<\/strong> When readers contact me asking for QSL information from an obscure broadcaster, the first place I search is the current WRTH.
