Public radio engineers await fate of major antenna maker (Current)<\/a><\/h2>\n

The potential sale of one of the country\u2019s only major manufacturers of high-power FM broadcast antennas is causing concern among public radio engineers who have long depended on the company for challenging projects such as directional antennas and multistation combiner systems.<\/p>\n

Antennas and combiners made by Shively Labs carry the signals of many major stations, from Boston\u2019s WBUR to Dallas\u2019 KERA\/KXT to Seattle\u2019s KUOW. Shively\u2019s headquarters in Maine boasts one of the few test ranges needed to fully prepare complex directional antenna systems for real-world performance.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1963 by former RCA engineer Ed Shively, the company has been owned since 1980 by Howell Laboratories, an engineering firm that now has a wide range of product lines. Those include water purification systems, dehydrators and an increasing amount of contract work for the U.S. Navy.<\/p>\n

Did AM Radio Just Get Hit By \u201cLightning\u201d? (Radio World)<\/a><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s something missing from the newest F-150 Lightning truck<\/p>\n

These days, the auto industry is as disrupted as broadcast radio. Like the radio companies \u2013 a group of independent operators, each moving down a different pathway \u2013 automakers are highly individual companies.<\/p>\n

And in much the same way radio broadcasters have been rocked by digital players \u2013 streamers, podcasters, satellite radio \u2013 the auto companies have watched an outsider by the name of Elon Musk transform the way cars (and soon trucks) are designed, built, and sold.<\/p>\n

[…]The company has led the way in trucks for decades with the F-150, the most successful in its class. How Can Radio Appeal to Young Consumers? (Radio World)<\/a><\/h2>\n

Radio has reinvented itself before to \u201cgo where the listeners are.\u201d It could do so again<\/p>\n

Broadcast radio is facing some significant challenges \u2014 and one of them involves young people.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to a recent report to the government of the United Kingdom. Though specific to the U.K. marketplace, the \u201cDigital Radio and Audio Review\u201d explores issues that are relevant to broadcasters everywhere.<\/p>\n

The report was a joint government\/industry project commissioned by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, prompted by the question of whether analog radio services should be sunset.<\/p>\n

The report has many positive things to say overall. It describes radio as \u201ca great British success story\u201d and said the medium has evolved to embrace digital opportunities to maintain universal appeal. It describes a \u201cthriving\u201d radio market and said new online formats from broadcasters and new entrants have grown rapidly, bringing \u201cincreased choice and new habits to the U.K.\u2019s audio sector.\u201d<\/p>\n

[…]But the report\u2019s discussion about trends among young listeners is eye-catching.<\/p>\n

[…]The report notes an ongoing decline in young listeners as online music options proliferate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the 10 years from 2010 to 2020, the weekly reach of live radio among 15\u201324s declined by 8% (or 7.1 percentage points) from 88.7% to 81.6%,\u201d the review stated. [Continue reading the full story…<\/a>]<\/p>\n
