{"id":57680,"date":"2023-08-31T05:00:09","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T09:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=57680"},"modified":"2023-08-30T16:42:50","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T20:42:50","slug":"how-dxers-can-contribute-to-ionospheric-research-during-the-october-14-2023-solar-eclipse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2023\/08\/how-dxers-can-contribute-to-ionospheric-research-during-the-october-14-2023-solar-eclipse\/","title":{"rendered":"How DXers can contribute to ionospheric research during the October 14, 2023 solar eclipse!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Many thanks to <em>SWling Post<\/em> contributor, Nick Hall-Patch, who shares the following announcement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57681\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-300x92.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-1024x312.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-768x234.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image1-624x190.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a>How DXers can contribute to ionospheric research during the 14 October 2023 solar eclipse<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There will be an annular solar eclipse on 14 October, 2023 when, at totality, the size of the Moon\u2019s disk will appear slightly smaller than the size of the Sun\u2019s disk.\u00a0 This eclipse will affect all of North America, as well as Central and part of South America, as seen in the map below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57682\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"733\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2.jpg 733w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-624x624.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>AM Broadcast Band DXers know that the blocking out of radiation from the sun during a total solar eclipse can introduce temporary night time listening conditions over an area far beyond the path of totality.<\/p>\n<p><i>The upcoming annular eclipse is expected to have a similar effect on daytime medium wave listening conditions as would a total solar eclipse<\/i>, and should not be missed by DXers.\u00a0 Live listening can be done during the eclipse, as well as recording the entire medium wave band, using SDRs (software defined radios).<\/p>\n<p>There might be more to our DXing results than new and unexpected receptions of distant radio stations, however.\u00a0 The rapidly changing listening conditions will be indicating a similarly turbulent ionosphere, and DXers\u2019 documenting those listening conditions through SDR recordings could provide information that will be useful to scientists who want to gain a better understanding of the Earth&#8217;s ionospheric dynamics.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How can DXers contribute to ionospheric research?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>HamSCI is an organization of volunteer citizen-scientists and professional researchers who study upper atmospheric and space physics, and will be interested in examining MW DXers&#8217;
