{"id":6084,"date":"2013-03-27T09:27:08","date_gmt":"2013-03-27T13:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=6084"},"modified":"2013-03-27T09:29:22","modified_gmt":"2013-03-27T13:29:22","slug":"6084","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/6084\/","title":{"rendered":"VOA reducing shortwave radio broadcasts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6085\" alt=\"VOA\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/VOA-300x168.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/VOA-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/VOA-100x56.png 100w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/VOA.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Following the <a title=\"BBC World Service to \u201csimplify\u201d English and cut Arabic on shortwave\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/bbc-world-service-to-simplify-and-reduce-global-english-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\">BBC World Service&#8217;s lead<\/a>, the VOA will reduce broadcasts to Iran,\u00a0Albania, Georgia and Latin America, along with English language broadcasts to the Middle East and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Full details below:<\/p>\n<p>(Source: <a title=\"Inside VOA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.insidevoa.com\/content\/voa-reducing-radio-frequencies\/1629194.html\" target=\"_blank\">Inside VOA<\/a>)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>WASHINGTON, D.C.\u00a0\u2014 Voice of America is reducing some of its radio transmissions this weekend and ending shortwave broadcasts to regions where audiences have alternative ways of receiving VOA news and information programs.<\/p>\n<p>The transmission reductions allow VOA to comply with budget cuts required by sequestration and to avoid furloughs of staff members.<\/p>\n<p>When the new broadcast schedule goes into effect on March 31st, cross-border shortwave and medium wave broadcasts to Albania, Georgia, Iran and Latin America will be curtailed, along with English language broadcasts to the Middle East and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>VOA will continue to provide audiences in these regions with up-to-date news and information through a host of other platforms, including radio and TV affiliate stations, direct-to-home satellite, web streaming, mobile sites and social media.<\/p>\n<p>The new broadcast schedule calls for reductions in some\u00a0 shortwave and medium wave radio broadcasts in Cantonese, Dari\/Pashto, English to Africa, Khmer, Kurdish, Mandarin, Portuguese, Urdu and Vietnamese.
