{"id":60965,"date":"2024-10-26T05:11:05","date_gmt":"2024-10-26T09:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=60965"},"modified":"2024-10-25T09:16:36","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T13:16:36","slug":"soldersmoke-monitoring-maritime-radio-messages-with-yadd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2024\/10\/soldersmoke-monitoring-maritime-radio-messages-with-yadd\/","title":{"rendered":"SolderSmoke: Monitoring Maritime Radio Messages with YADD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Many thanks to\u00a0<em>SWLing Post<\/em>\u00a0contributor, Bill Meara who shares\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/soldersmoke.blogspot.com\/2024\/10\/monitoring-maritime-radio-messages-with.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the following article from the excellent SolderSmoke Podcast blog<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Monitoring Maritime Radio Messages with YADD<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/YADD.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-60966\" src=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/YADD.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"919\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/YADD.png 919w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/YADD-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/YADD-768x533.png 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/YADD-624x433.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 919px) 100vw, 919px\" \/><\/a>This is really cool and very easy.\u00a0 Easy nerd thrills.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Steve VE7SL,<a href=\"https:\/\/ve7sl.blogspot.com\/2024\/10\/yadd-maritime-hf-activity-revisited.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0put up a blog post<\/a>\u00a0on how we can relive the glories of our youth by monitoring HF long-distance maritime traffic.\u00a0 In the old days the ships were on CW and many report that it was great fun to listen to the various &#8220;fists&#8221; in action from coastal stations, and from ships on the high seas.\u00a0 While the CW is long gone, this maritime traffic is still on the air.\u00a0 Today they are using a SEL call system called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital_selective_calling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Selective Calling or DSC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Happily, it is very easy to decode these transmissions.\u00a0 Steve recommends a program called YADD (Yet Another DSC Decoder).\u00a0 I downloaded it in seconds and had it installed on my computer in minutes.\u00a0 Next I had to find a general coverage receiver.\u00a0 I thought about pressing my old HQ-100 into service, or maybe even the S-38E, but a cooler head prevailed.\u00a0 I remembered that Farhan had given us a general coverage receiver in his uBITX transceiver.\u00a0 So it came off the shelf and got powered up.\u00a0 Around dawn on October 14, 2024 I put the receiver on 8.415 MHz LSB.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t even have to do a real connection to the computer &#8212; I just put the speaker close to the mic and that was sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>Boom.\u00a0 Soon I was getting signals from ships afloat and from coastal stations.\u00a0 I heard Shanghai, New Zealand, and Australia.\u00a0 \u00a0See above.\u00a0 \u00a0From the U.S., I heard Miami, but the most emotional for me was hearing the station at Pt.
