Just how hardcore are you as a DXer?<\/p>\n

I received the following from a ham radio friend:<\/p>\n

Greetings all!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I received an interesting opportunity for anyone capable and interested<\/em><\/strong>
\nin helping NYS DEC. This was aimed at Warren County, however I thought<\/em><\/strong>
\nhams in the Northern District surrounding counties could also assist,<\/em><\/strong>
\nparticularly Saratoga and Washington counties:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We were recently contacted by a representative of NYS DEC, Fish and<\/em><\/strong>
\nWildlife Division requesting the assistance of the amateur radio<\/em><\/strong>
\ncommunity. The DEC will be releasing approximately 20 bats with<\/em><\/strong>
\ntransmitters attached and hope to track them to their summer roosting<\/em><\/strong>
\nlocations. They are scheduled to be released on April 22 at Hague, NY.<\/em><\/strong>
\nThe frequencies for these transmitters will be in the 150-151MHz range<\/em><\/strong>
\nand are included below. They will emit about 35 pulses per minute. The<\/em><\/strong>
\nidea is to set up your radio to scan the frequencies (by entering each<\/em><\/strong>
\none, or scanning from 150-151MHz in 1KHz steps). Should you get a “hit”,<\/em><\/strong>
\nnote the frequency and cross it to the serial number of the transmitter.<\/em><\/strong>
\nNote the date and time and report it to me.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

This sounds like a fun exercise and we will be helping the DEC as well.<\/em><\/strong>
\nIf you think you will be participating, let me know. I’d like to report<\/em><\/strong>
\nback to the DEC representative with an approximate head county.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Update: <\/em><\/strong>
\nThe release date has been moved to April 22.<\/em><\/strong>
\nOne thing I didn\u2019t mention in the original emai l: the transmitters<\/em><\/strong>
\nwill work for about 2 weeks. So please scan when and where you are able<\/em><\/strong>
\nto within the 2 week period. Also, many radios do not have the ability<\/em><\/strong>
\nto tune in 1 KHz steps so your radio may not be able to monitor all the<\/em><\/strong>
\ntransmitters. Scanners may work. Regardless, do the best you can. If<\/em><\/strong>
\nyou are planning to participate and haven\u2019t already notified me,<\/em><\/strong>
\nplease let me know so I can notify DEC how many stations will<\/em><\/strong>
\nparticipate. Finally, here is the data sheet sent by DEC to help log<\/em><\/strong>
\nany \u201chits\u201d you might get. If you get any \u201chits\u201d, please send<\/em><\/strong>
\ninfo to me no later than the following day.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Update:<\/em><\/strong>
\nThe bats will tentatively be released around 2015 hrs. tomorrow April<\/em><\/strong>
\n22. IMPORTANT: the transmitters will be using CW, not FM as previously<\/em><\/strong>
\nthought. (This is completely my fault as I assumed 2m band to be FM)<\/em><\/strong>
\nAnyway, please change your mode to CW. I\u2019m hopeful that we will get<\/em><\/strong>
\nsome \u201chits\u201d, especially from the folks to the South. Ashley Meyer,<\/em><\/strong>
\nthe DEC representative, has agreed to do a debrief\/presentation on<\/em><\/strong>
\nMonday, May 5 at 1915 hrs. I will be sending out a Zoom link a few days<\/em><\/strong>
\nprior.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
