Marketplace&#8217;s host, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/people\/kai-ryssdal\">Kai Ryssdal<\/a>,\u00a0asked Price why Syria&#8217;s Internet is so vulnerable to shut-down. You see, on Tuesday\u00a0Syria&#8217;s Internet had completely shut down by 2:48 PM EST and remained down for a total of 19 hours. Price&#8217;s explanation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Certain countries have limited access to the internet. In the case of Syria, there are only four connection points, and they&#8217;re all run by the national Syrian telecommunications company.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interesting. \u00a0Other countries that are similarly vulnerable include Greenland, Cuba, North Korea, Libya, and Tunisia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/photo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6472 alignleft\" alt=\"photo (1)\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/photo-1-300x228.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/photo-1-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/photo-1-100x76.jpg 100w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/photo-1.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A few months ago, I wrote a post on this very topic, entitled:\u00a0<a title=\"Syria stifles the Internet while Canada stifles shortwave\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/syria-stifles-the-internet-while-canada-stifles-shortwave\/\" target=\"_blank\">Syria stifles the Internet while Canada stifles shortwave<\/a>. I&#8217;m pleased and gratified that <em>Popular Communications Magazine<\/em> picked up my article; it&#8217;s\u00a0published in their April 2013 issue.<\/p>\n<p>Shortwave radio is not <em>the<\/em> solution to all communications needs, of course, but it is certainly the only international broadcast medium I know of that is impossible for a country like Syria to completely shut down.
