For your local weather forecasts and alerts, visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/index_e.html?layers=lightning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interactive weather map<\/a>\u00a0or download the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/weather-general-tools-resources\/weathercan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WeatherCAN app<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you use Weatheradio in Canada (especially for \u201calways-on\u201d alerting via a dedicated receiver), you\u2019ll want to take note of what\u2019s changing, what isn\u2019t, and what alternatives ECCC is directing users to.<\/p>\n<p>ECCC notes&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/weatheradio.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the same page<\/a> as their announcement above&#8211;that over 90% of Canadians currently live within range of a Weatheradio transmitter, and that typical broadcast range is about 60 km (terrain, receiver quality, and antenna height can affect this). This network uses the familiar VHF weather frequencies in the 162 MHz range (including 162.400\u2013162.550 MHz, depending on the transmitter)&#8211;the same frequencies used by NOAA in the US.<\/p>\n<p>The Toronto Sun also picked up this news and notes that the service has been around for decades (launched in 1976, with a later upgrade in 2004 to include SAME-style alerting), and frames this as a significant change for Canadians who rely on weather radio for emergency alerting. During that time, we relied <em>heavily<\/em> on NOAA Weather Radio to keep receiving forecasts and updates. That experience really drove home something many of us in the radio community already understand: <em><strong>sometimes you invest in systems not because they\u2019re used every day, but because they can be life-saving when everything else breaks.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, removing a resilient, one-to-many broadcast alerting resource like Weatheradio is poor management of taxpayer funds&#8211;not because it\u2019s cheap, but because the value shows up when you need it most.<\/p>\n<h1>Canadians: Take Action Now<\/h1>\n<p>Here are two official channels I could find to <strong>ask for the Weatheradio shutdown decision to be reversed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<h2>1) Contact your Member of Parliament (MP)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Find your MP (by name or riding) and get their email\/phone info here:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/members\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find Members of Parliament<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>MP directory search (another entry point):<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Members\/en\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Current Members of Parliament \u2013 search<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mailing an MP is postage-free:<\/strong>\u00a0you can address mail to<br \/>\n<code>[Name of Member of Parliament]<\/code><br \/>\n<code>House of Commons<\/code><br \/>\n<code>Ottawa, Ontario<\/code><br \/>\n<code>Canada K1A 0A6<\/code>\u00a0<sup class=\"trigger\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/en\/contact-us#:~:text=Contact%20a%20Member,Canada%20K1A%200A6\">10<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>The House of Commons also maintains <strong>addresses\/phone numbers for current MPs<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Members\/en\/addresses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Addresses for current MPs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2) Contact the Minister responsible<\/h2>\n<p>The Weatheradio decision falls under\u00a0<strong>Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)<\/strong>.
