{"id":7002,"date":"2013-08-13T14:43:38","date_gmt":"2013-08-13T18:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=7002"},"modified":"2013-08-13T14:43:38","modified_gmt":"2013-08-13T18:43:38","slug":"call-me-anachronistic-but-i-listen-to-digital-tech-shows-on-shortwave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/call-me-anachronistic-but-i-listen-to-digital-tech-shows-on-shortwave\/","title":{"rendered":"Call me anachronistic, but I listen to digital tech shows on shortwave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/BBC_Click.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7033\" alt=\"BBC_Click\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/BBC_Click.jpeg\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/BBC_Click.jpeg 259w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/BBC_Click-100x74.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a>While I&#8217;m passionate about shortwave radio&#8211;a technology that has, of course, been around for many decades&#8211;I also love to hear about emerging digital technologies, especially those that make our world a better place.<\/p>\n<p>These days, I listen to several shows about technology, many of which are only available as a live stream or podcast (like <a title=\"This Week In Tech\" href=\"http:\/\/twit.tv\/show\/this-week-in-tech\" target=\"_blank\">TWIT<\/a>, for example).<\/p>\n<p>There are two shows, however, that I like to listen to on shortwave radio when my schedule allows.<\/p>\n<p>One such show is the BBC World Service technology show, <strong><em>Click<\/em><\/strong> (formerly <em>Digital Planet<\/em>). I&#8217;ve listened to <em>Click<\/em> for years, and have even been interviewed on the show by its marvelous host Gareth Mitchell (<a title=\"BBC Click Ears To Our World interview\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p00c1s15\" target=\"_blank\">click here to listen<\/a>). I especially love the show&#8217;s focus on technologies that have a positive impact in developing countries (hence my interview, about my non-profit, <a title=\"Check out ETOW\" href=\"http:\/\/earstoourworld.org\" target=\"_blank\">ETOW)<\/a>. Mitchell, I&#8217;m delighted to add, is quite the fan of shortwave radio as well, and is not afraid of reporting on technologies that are not exclusively tied to smart phones and the like.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DownloadThisShow-RadioAustralia.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7034\" alt=\"DownloadThisShow-RadioAustralia\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DownloadThisShow-RadioAustralia.jpeg\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DownloadThisShow-RadioAustralia.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DownloadThisShow-RadioAustralia-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DownloadThisShow-RadioAustralia-100x100.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Another show I&#8217;ve been listening to for a few months is <strong><em>Download This Show<\/em><\/strong> on Radio Australia. It&#8217;s a fun and informative technology program and always has a great panel discussion on technology news. What I really love about this show is its take on Australian technology in particular, and how this compares with technology in the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Since <a title=\"Download This Show's web page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/downloadthisshow\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Download This Show<\/em><\/a> is broadcast via Radio Australia&#8217;s Shepparton transmitting site, the signal is quite strong here in North America and easily received on portable shortwave radios.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Right click to download\" href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/download\/RadioAustraliaNPR9.58MHz02AUG1313\/RadioAustraliaNPR-9.58MHz-02AUG13-13.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to download over two hours of Radio Australia, including <em>Download this Show<\/em><\/a>, or listen via the embedded player below.
