Eric is a good buddy and fellow ham, and for several years now, we&#8217;ve made it a point to visit both the <a title=\"National Museum of the USAF\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalmuseum.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Museum of the US Air Force<\/a> and <a title=\"WPAFB\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpafb.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wright Patterson AFB<\/a> while at the Hamvention. This year he was in need of some gear, so we visited the store where those on active duty purchase Air Force-approved gear and clothing. Being a bit of a pack fanatic, I of course quickly found the backpack section. Here are a few of its advertised features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>14 separate storage compartments\/ slots<\/li>\n<li>A unique &#8220;inside-out&#8221; design which allows for instant open access while inside packs<\/li>\n<li>12&#8243; gear-keeper leash for keys, lights, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Clear business card\/ID window<\/li>\n<li>External mesh pocket<\/li>\n<li>External accessory loops and carrying handle<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;D&#8221;-ring attachment points for optional shoulder strap<\/li>\n<li>Fully zippered perimeter allows for a 90\u00b0 opening<\/li>\n<li>Extremely tough Cordura\u00ae 1000D nylon exterior lined with heavy duty nylon pack cloth<\/li>\n<li>Fully seam-taped interior<\/li>\n<li>High-tensile nylon web attachment points and<\/li>\n<li>Bar-tack reinforcements at critical stress points<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One glance at the Pack-Rat, and I knew that one of its two largest interior pockets could hold my larger shortwave portables, the other could hold my Kindle Fire tablet, and there would still be plenty of room for wires, cables, accessories, and headphones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7111\" alt=\"PackRat3\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat3-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat3-75x100.jpg 75w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat3.jpg 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>After bringing it home, I was simply amazed at exactly <em>how much<\/em> gear it could readily hold. \u00a0And indeed, this summer I&#8217;ve taken it on several trips; including my <a title=\"SWLing in Belize City: comparing the Grundig G5 and G3\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/swling-in-belize-city-comparing-the-grundig-g5-and-g3\/\" target=\"_blank\">July trip to Belize<\/a> for which I packed all of my gear into one small convertible carry-on pack (a small\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=timbuk2%20wingman&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=swlcom01-20\" target=\"_blank\">Timbuk2 Wingman<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=swlcom01-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B005CQ2ZY6\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0with wind screen and mic stand holder<\/li>\n<li>Eight AA batteries<\/li>\n<li>Ear buds<\/li>\n<li>Icom ID-51A HT and adaptor<\/li>\n<li>2 Cliff Bars (a guy&#8217;s gotta eat!)<\/li>\n<li>3&#8242; stereo audio patch cable<\/li>\n<li>two alligator clip leads<\/li>\n<li>keys<\/li>\n<li>pen, pencil, notepad<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"what I do\" href=\"http:\/\/earstoourworld.org\" target=\"_blank\">business cards<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this point, the little pack was full, but could close very easily and didn&#8217;t even bulge on the sides; even with all that (somewhat bulky) gear inside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7110\" alt=\"PackRat1\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat1-155x300.jpg\" width=\"155\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat1-155x300.jpg 155w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat1-531x1024.jpg 531w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat1-51x100.jpg 51w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/PackRat1.jpg 847w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/><\/a>Best yet, as I moved around in town, I could use the shoulder strap from my convertible backpack on the Pack-Rat, making it very easy to carry. Even though most of the internal pockets are open from the top, I never had anything fall out, even when the pack was upside down. \u00a0When the pack shuts, it seems to put enough pressure on the pockets to hold items securely. It&#8217;s bright yellow interior makes it very easy to see the contents even in dim conditions, such as on a night flight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=spec%20ops%20brand&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=swlcom01-20\" target=\"_blank\">Spec-Ops packs<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=swlcom01-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> are made with pride in the USA and obviously meet military standards for durability and construction. They also carry a lifetime warranty.
