There is neither a start\u00a0nor end of the transmission, just a few 5-digit groups.\u00a0\u00a0 It was recorded sometime between 1977 &#8211; 1980, at my cottage near\u00a0Ceska Lipa, Czech Republic (but it was <a title=\"Wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Czechoslovak_Socialist_Republic\" target=\"_blank\">Czechoslovak Socialistic Republic<\/a>\u00a0[then]).<\/p>\n<p>Reception was made on a Czechoslovak tube receiver &#8220;<a title=\"Check out this radio at the radio museum website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radiomuseum.org\/r\/tesla_barcarola_1009a_1009_a.html\" target=\"_blank\">Barcarola<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0on a shortwave band with classic AM (of course this receiver was not capable\u00a0of SSB or any other advanced modes) using a random wire (about 10 m)\u00a0antenna.<\/p>\n<p>A recording was made on the <a title=\"Check out the recorder on radio museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radiomuseum.org\/r\/tesla_b400b_40_anp222anp_22.html\" target=\"_blank\">B400 Czechoslovak tape recorder<\/a>\u00a0using a Scotch 220 magnetic tape (exactly the one which is in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiomuseum.org\/r\/tesla_b400b_40_anp222anp_22.html\" target=\"_blank\">the picture<\/a>),\u00a0speed 9.53 cm\/s.\u00a0Import to the digital domain was performed using the <a title=\"Audacity\" href=\"http:\/\/audacity.sourceforge.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Audacity<\/a> open source\u00a0sound recording and processing software, without any artificial filtering\u00a0or other DSP techniques.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Click to download the MP3 version\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/download\/GermanNumberStation\/german-number-station.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">As you can hear,<\/a> it was perfect, clear readability:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/GermanNumberStation\" height=\"30\" width=\"500\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I know that because the recording is incomplete, it has just a low value\u00a0as such, but maybe it can at least demonstrate, which kind of equipment\u00a0was obvious at this time and that it was possible to use it for activities\u00a0like SW listening and number station (at least the strong ones) monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m curious whether somebody will identify the station.<\/p>\n<p>With regards,<br \/>\nPavel<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_7551\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Barcarola-ts1009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7551\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7551\" alt=\"Pavel's Barcarola was similar to this model (Photo source: http:\/\/www.oldradio.cz\/)\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Barcarola-ts1009.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Barcarola-ts1009.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Barcarola-ts1009-100x80.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pavel&#8217;s Barcarola was similar to this model (Photo source: http:\/\/www.oldradio.cz\/)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What really amazes me is the fidelity of Pavel&#8217;s recording. Though the transmitter might have been relatively local, there is certainly something to be said for analog equipment&#8211;both Pavel&#8217;s Barcarola receiver and his B400 recorder.<\/p>\n<p>I actually collect and maintain more tube receivers than solid state.
