Radio VR) English language service to hear the state news agency&#8217;s take on <a title=\"Putin liquidates the Voice of Russia, absorbed by Rossia Segodnya newswire\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/putin-liquidates-the-voice-of-russia-absorbed-by-rossia-segodnya-newswire\/\">the sweeping changes President Vladimir Putin implemented yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I expected the story to be somewhat buried amongst international headlines, but instead I heard no mention within the one hour news broadcast. [<em>Please note update at end of article.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/download\/VOR12.075MHz10DEC131300Z\/VOR-12.075MHz-10DEC13-1300Z.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">a recording<\/a> of the broadcast from today at 13:00 on 12,075 kHz (which begins to fade toward the end):<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/VOR12.075MHz10DEC131300Z\" height=\"30\" width=\"500\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I then searched through some spectrum recordings I made yesterday and discovered VOR&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/download\/VOR9.395MHz10DEC132300Z\/VOR-9.395MHz-09DEC13-2300Z.mp3\" target=\"_blank\"><em>American Edition<\/em> broadcast<\/a> on 9,395 kHz, starting at 23:00 UTC.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/VOR9.395MHz10DEC132300Z\" height=\"30\" width=\"500\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Even though this is the <em>American Edition<\/em>, I would have expected some mention of the news agency changes in the international news selection.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, VOR News prominently featured an article on their website yesterday regarding these changes within the state media. Indeed, it was the VOR News article that I posted\u00a0<a title=\"Putin liquidates the Voice of Russia, absorbed by Rossia Segodnya newswire\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/putin-liquidates-the-voice-of-russia-absorbed-by-rossia-segodnya-newswire\/\">yesterday<\/a>\u00a0on the SWLing Post.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Putin&#8217;s move will actually make previous <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/tag\/vor-cuts\" target=\"_blank\">news reports<\/a>\u00a0regarding the demise of VOR on shortwave null and void? Only time will tell.<\/p>\n<p>On a side note,\u00a0I imagine this move by Putin could lower Russia&#8217;s position on the 2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/press-freedom-index-2013,1054.html\" target=\"_blank\">Press Freedom Index<\/a>&#8211;they&#8217;re currently listed at 148 out of a possible 179 (with Finland in the number 1 position and Eritrea having the least press freedom at 179).<\/p>\n<p>(<strong>Update<\/strong>: Please note that the title of this post used to read, &#8220;Voice of Russia\u00a0<em>news<\/em>\u00a0lacks\u00a0any mention of sweeping changes to state news agency.&#8221; I&#8217;ve since updated the title to more accurately reflect my point, by replacing the word &#8220;news&#8221; with &#8220;broadcasts.&#8221; \u00a0I also added the audio from yesterday&#8217;s American Hour and removed some links to international media.
